Round Reel Refinement - The JDM Daiwa Millionaire CT SV70



Introduction: Originally brought onto to TackleTour as a specialists of sorts, concentrating primarily on enthusiast tackle, my responsibilities have expanded through the years to include product spanning the spectrum from affordability to "you've got to be kidding me." Recently, I've been writing about far more of the former than the latter, but enthusiast level tackle will always have my soul. Afterall, it is in the high end tackle where all the excitement occurs.



Earlier this year, feeling a general malaise of indifference brought about by an overload of every day tackle, I went on a bit of a spree to feed my enthusiast soul. The Conquest 842C MBR was part of this prescription. The subject of today's review continued my recovery. Here's our look at Daiwa Japan's 2019 Millionaire CT SV70.

Just a little slip when you compare the two spools (third and second to last pics).
"The CT SV70's spool (right) is quite a bit smaller than that of the classic Millionaire's (left). Note, the spool on the left is from a TDZ 100M but also fits in the classic Millionaire".

Old Millionaire has a 34mm spool, like TD-Z 103 and 105.
TD-Z 100M has a 36mm spool with blue-purple inductor, that doesn't fit in a old Millionaire (CV-X, CV-Z...)

Thanks for the catch... I think I meant the TDZ105. I took the spool out of my Bay Casting Special because my standard Millionaire isn't stock anymore. It has a ZPI spool in it. I thought I put a TDZ spool in the Bay Casting too, but looking up the old review, I see that is the stock spool. Too many reels! ... will see about getting that corrected.

There's been a bit of mixed feelings upon members, regarding this reel. Not that it's necessarily bad, but a poorer performer in comparison to the other CT 70 reels. I've been on the fence for a while now. Those damn orange spacers drive me a bit nutty. It's a bit of an odd ball, being that it's a good fit fit for power finesse, yet it weighs quite a bit more than other finesse oriented reels. Would have liked to see a little less heft. Sure is sharp looking.

I think in order to appreciate this reel, you have to have a predisposition towards round reels. You're never going to get good weight numbers from a reel like this because none of the parts are composite materials - they're all aluminum. In return, that makes them really solid.

While Daiwa's Ryoga platform has pretty much usurped Millionaire, I've missed the availability of this platform in their lineup. The 100 sized Millionaires are special. Just like the 50 and 100 sized Conquest reels from Shimano.

Too bad Daiwa doesn't make a more compact Millionaire to go up against the Conquest 50... that'd be so much fun!

Every once in a while I go to TW website, open up the Shimano casting reels, and just drool over the 50. At 7.5 oz, I could easily fish it all day.
It looks like a finely engineered machine.

I didn't think Shimano made a 50 Conquest any more, just the smaller 100.
