Built to Vanquish the Competition, but Equal to Stella?

Image

Introduction: As Shimano continues to make that transition to a global lineup for their bass fishing reels, more and more traditional JDM models are becoming easily available stateside. Products like Metanium, Antares, Conquest, Twin Power, Aldebaran can now be had within a day or two through a click of your mouse button. If you're lucky enough and your tackle store has enough clout, you can even handle these models before taking the dive. For those who actually prefer their prize reels remain more difficult to acquire, there remain a few gems still under JDM-only control. The Shimano Vanquish is one such treasure and thanks to JapanTackle, we're able to share with you today, our thoughts on this stealthy little enthusiast reel.

Nice review.

Check the Plus/Minus on the last page..

The Vanford delivers a great balance of weight/performance but doesn't match the Stella's level of refinement

Great Review
I own the same one of those gems and agree with you 100%
Lightweight, no flex, great drag, a pleasure to fish with but..... not a Stella
but very close
as a matter of fact I happen to love the balance of the double paddle handle
I get them from Japan for all of my Shimano Bass fishing spinning reels!
BTW, that stick you have in the review picture looks really awesome, what make is it? or is it a custom built rod?
Thanks to all of you guys at Tackletour for keeping us up on all the new technologies!
I look forward every day to see what's next!
Stay Safe!
Fish On!

Looks like an ark reinforcer rod. Not sure which model but it looks pretty close. Correct me if I am wrong.

Was there a lubing issue? Sounds kind of crazy to me that the vanguish has a heavier/slower start up than the vanford. Other than that, everything else in the review seems spot on.

That was Zander's input.. I haven't fished the Vanford, so I can't comment.

Hi RYB, I've fished both over the entire season now as Cal gave me the Vanquish to fish early in the year and draw additional comparisons with the newest reels. It is possible our Vanquish reel has shown some wear over use and I'll go back and lube it but it definitely doesn't feel as light on initial startup, however once it gets going it does feel smoother than the Vanford (which is why I've never felt the need to service it yet)
