Shimano Japan Renews Their Shining Star : The 2022 Aldebaran BFS

Image

Introduction: Making its debut in 2009, the original Aldebaran was positioned as Shimano Japan's answer to Daiwa Japan's little purple wonder, the Alphas (debuted in 2004). Since that time, Shimano's compact casting wonder has slowly evolved into a finesse casting specialist. For 2022, Shimano Japan has updated the platform with a refined braking system and weight saving ergonomics to deliver a sub five ounce wonder for bait finesse enthusiasts. Here's our look at the '22 Aldebaran BFS.

I’m a bit surprised that a review score under 8.0 results in an award, but maybe the Enthusiast Award just means “it’s good and we know you’ll buy it anyway!” :)

Just because a product scores a certain way objectively, does not mean it doesn't appeal to us in other ways.. the Enthusiast Award is about ENTHUSIASM!! ;)

Nice review! I thought I was the only one left with a Weibe seated MBR721 IMX. I have an Alphas SV on mine. Love the combo!

Everyone has their own opinions/perceptions. The scoring table "standardizes" the rating system. The way the tester feels/experiences about the tackle is another factor.

I personally like the 22 Aldebaran BFS a lot. I also use mine different than Cal and also have different attributes I focus on. I never go to one source for info for that reason. Multiple sources will give you the best way to draw your own conclusions. It is all in the eye of the beholder.

Good review. I thought it's worth mentioning that the Aldebaran is a magnesium framed reel, not aluminum. Great info though. Thank you.

Thanks for that Phish... I must have missed that due to the "Hagane" specification forgetting that designation is independent of material

I have the previous version Aldebaran and I love it. It is paired with an Expride 6’10 medium. I primarily use it for jerkbaits (perfect for that technique), but also for poppers, lighter underspins, etc. I have to be honest, I don’t love the looks of the new one. The only thing that would entice me if it is a better caster. The older Aldebaran is great. Is this much better?

This new BFS Aldebaran isn't meant to upgrade or replace the Aldebaran MGL, it's a continuation of the BFS line. Meant for very light baits that you want to throw on a baitcaster (== BFS), but that I wouldn't expect you to ever throw on a Medium rod in the first place (a M rod is too heavy for the baits the Aldebaran BFS is meant for).

Just to be clear, I'm not saying the reel shouldn't get that award, just curious. Objectively, it's the first TT-reviewed Aldebaran with a final score under 8.0, I was wondering if there is an internal threshold.

This being TacklTour, I'll probably own one myself in a few months anyway, after selling my Curado BFS ;)

There's no correlation to what a product scores and whether or not it qualifies for an award... if that's what you mean?
