reel for light crankbaits

Post by Steere »

I am looking for 2 good reels to throw light Crankbaits on. I am having a problem throwing them with my Revo SX's, and would like to replace them. I was looking at the new Diawa Advantage super tuned, but not sure if they will throw light baits well. Thanks!!

I dont have one yet, but ask around and I will bet that the conquest 50/51 would be the choice pick for light cranks. Right now, my 50mg is the perfect little reel for light cranks and most other situations other than deep divers and frogs.

Scorpion 1000
Scorpion MG
Alphas Ito-ai
Pixy
Conquest 50

All from $ to more $$$ in range and will throw light baits with pretty good ease. 8-)

For the really small or lightweight cranks I use a Scorpion 1000 with 5:1 gear set + bearing supported handle + ABEC 7 spool bearings...

Depending on your price range, here's a few of the better options for light cranks(IMO):

1) Conquest 50
2) Scorpion 1000
3) Chronarch 50Mg
4) Curado 100

I am a huge fan of the Daiwa Alphas.
I have both the ito ai version and the normal purple version. They are excellent reels that can cast a crank extremely well.

They are made even better with D.R.'s wonderful drag and spool bearing upgrades.

How does one get those gears in a Scorpion? Do you have to have a donor reel?

I use an Advantage P series, it does well for me, it really depends on how light you're talking, as my Revo really stinks for anything below 3/8. It can do it, I suppose, I just don't.

I'm thinking of getting the yumeya shallow spool for the 07 Met Mg to use for light crankbaits.

http://fishing.shimano.co.jp/cat/detail.asp?k=18055

It's only 10.9g so it should cast light cranks fairly well. And I'm not too worried about line cap for light crankbaits anyway. The pic doesn't show the SVS on it, but I've been told it comes with it.
Or I'll wait for the ZPI spool to come out next month for the 07 Met Mg.

Call up Shimano and order the 5:1 gear set from the previous version Calais 200 (CL200-5)

Scorpion 1000
Scorpion 1000MG
Chronarch 50MG
Curado 100B
Curado 100D
Alphas 103
Alphas ito 103
Pixy

Nice list guys...gotta add these for me:

TDZ, CVZ 103/105, Luna 103, Calais 100/Antares AR, TDX (US and JDM), Morrum 1600/3600 SX (can be found relatively cheap), Millionaire CVX 103, Calcutta DC100/Conquest 100.

Now, for the $150 range: Find a Millionaire CVX 103, Morrum SX 1600/3600, Curado 100, TDX (HSDF if possible for US or JDM used) and even the original Scorpion 1000 (Which BTW can be had now for around $160-$170!!). I like all of these myself, better than Diawa's Advantage.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the info. I may give the scorpions a try, but really like the round reels for crankbaits. If you know of anyone with some for sale or that would like to trade for some revo SX or Quantum Energy let me know. Thanks again!!
