Thanks Tackle Tour!

Post by Jettywolf » Wed Sep 19, 2007 12:47 pm

I'm a newbie here, but have been surfing tackle tour for years.
And when I read about the new Shimano Carado 300DSV coming out, I came straight to TT and found and read the report on them.

As a saltwater fishing guide I've always been leary about a low profile reel #1 having a low line capacity, and #2 being capable of some salty abuse.

These two reels would be my first ever low profile reels to be used in Saltwater.......I know, I'm way behind the 8-ball.

Knowing good and well low profiles are the reels of choice for Texas trout waders...in super saline waters of laguna Madre. And quite possibly a dunking here and there. I thought to myself, Man I missing out, I think.

So after reading the TT review, I purchased two 300DSV Corados.
And received the best price from a local Fishing shop.

And so far so good. And yes, I've been missing out for a long time.
Of course these reels are for my personal use, for Trout and Red fishing here in N.E. Florida.

Not a chance in hell of being spooled with all that line and smooth, quick retrieves, with slick, but powerful drags.

Matched to a G. Loomis Greenwater 8'3" rod, I have the perfect set up for what I do.

Thanks for all the info TT crew. Keep up the good work.

PS:
also watched Jeremy Sweet and Larry Dalhberg use the reels on those Golden Dorado's in Argentina on Larry's show.
I won't be doing anything like that anytime soon , except maybe a Tarpon hook-up on these reels is as close as I'll ever get.

But I'd love to know if they really used the 300 DSV Corado's the entire trip on those fish. Larry says they worked flawless....but C'C'mon. Those fish were insane and brutal.

I saw that Golden Dorado vid as well. It was awsome! Those fish really pull after smashing the bait. That said those fish were worn out quickley, and that goes easier on the reels. I'd love one of those 300 size Curado's but the handle is still on the wrong side. I would use them for what I'm fishing for right now and that is staging King Salmon. They also hit very hard and as long as they are fresh the last a great deal longer than those Golden Dorado's. Currently I'm using a Daiwa Advantage HST153L for the job at night rigged with 50lb braid on a stout 7'9" Fenwick Techna Salmon rod. I works well but I'm pretty sure that the Shimano would be even better. During the daylight I drop down to 20lb braid with 12lb down to 8lb Fluroleader on a Pfluger Supreme Spin reel. Awsome reel that holds a ton of line and weighs about 9 1/2oz. I sure wish Shimano would offer that 300 in lefthand drive. It would be my new go to reel for sure. Snidley

Welcome to TT from a Florida-born Southerner. My best buddy lives in JAX but he doesn't fish saltwater.

TT has been the reason for several of my tackle purchases too. ;)

Welcome to TT, Jettywolf. All my reels, rods and tackle purchasing decisions are somehow influenced by TT. Not just by the TT reviews but by reports and comments of members here.

Snidley, The JDM version of the Curado is called the Speedmaster, it's available with left hand retrieve. the model # is 201 and unlike the Curado it comes with ARB bearings and a reel cover. available on ebay for less than $200. I love it for Kings fresh from the salt.

The Speedmaster is only in the 201 size though. That works for most cases but there are times when it might come up short line capacity wise.

Snidley, it's not a "200" size reel. just like the Chronarch 101B isn't a "100" size reel. the Speedmaster 201 is the same size as a Curado 300. 120 yards of 20lb. mono capacity, 15lbs of drag, oversize paddle grips. ARB bearings, 7.0:1 instead of the 6.2:1 of the Curado. weight is 9.8 oz's versus 10.5 oz's for the Curado. no problem stopping 30# & 40# Kings on the run. less than $200, check one out they're great reels.

the speedmaster is the JDM equivalent of the curado 200DHSV, not the 300. the speedmaster has more line cap due to the deeper spool. if you want more line cap on the curado 200DHSV you could install the deep spool from the citica 200DSV

bantam1 commented on the above, as well as the release date for the lefty curado 300, in this post from the AC boards...

zenbassr,I don't know how they compare in physical size to the Curado 300 as I don't own one, but I do know that a 201 Speedmaster is larger than a 201 DHSV or 201 DPV as I own both. I "assumed" that since all the specs for line capacity were the same that they were, my bad. a citica 201DSV spool only holds 120 yards 0f 14# whereas a Speedmaster 201 holds 180 yards of 14# test. another 50% capacity over the Citica deep spool, they're not the same, not even close. anyhow just thought it would fill the bill for Snidley rather nicely. :)

not trying to be argumentative but just curious as to the source of your specs for the speedmaster line cap?

for instance, plat lists the speedmaster specs as 12lb (0.285mm) at 200m or 218yards. now the avg. diam for 8# yozuri hybrid is .0285mm so it's reasonable to assume you could spool up over 200yds with 8# but unlikely with 12# yozuri (0.338mm).

another online seller shows the speedmaster specs at 8lb-180yd, 10lb-155yd, 14lb-110yd, which is identical to the citica/curado 200D line caps.

shimano japan lists capacity for PE line only, in meters not yards, so what line, or line diameter conversions are being used to determine your specs(japanese line ratings in PE/m to us ratings in lb/yds)

zennbassr, I don't consider you argumentative. I consider this a quest for knowledge. let's dispell all rumors / myths here and now. sitting in front of me as I type are the specifications straight off of the Shimano paperwork that came with the reel. if Shimano doesn't know, then who does? here we go as listed verbatim from the paperwork. 3 (12lb) .285 is 200 meters or approx. 220 yards, 3.5 (14lb) .310 is 180 meters or just shy of 200 yards, 4 (16lb) .330 is 150 meters or approx. 165 yards, 5 (20lb.) .370 115 meters or approx. 125 yards. all manufacturers list an "average" as far as diameters versus capacity is involved. for sake of argument, I use 12# Maxima which is larger diameter than most and it is .320, copoly is even smaller than that. we can assume that the capacity with said line from above specifications would be approx. 165 meters or approx. 180 yards. more than any 200 Citica, 200 Curado, 100 Chronarch or 200 Calais by far. :)

Sounds like the speedmaster holds about as much line as an old standard 5500/5501 Abu Garcia C3/C4. That would be pretty good for Salmon and some ocean fish. snidley
