Frog rod reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Frog rod reel

Post by biggs »

Wondering what other guys are using for their frog rod reel??
For the past 2yrs I have been using a Curado e7 spooled with 70# samurai braid.

I've been using the Zillion 50th Anniversary and will be trying the Zillion Type-R with increased drag. This is for the hollow style frogs.
For the toads I'm throwing them on a Chronarch D7.

I have been using a Zillion HLC with an I'ze HLC spool and 65lb suffix, and have been very pleased. I just got some of the 60lb Sunline braid and am looking forward to trying it out.

How do you like the 50# Suffix 832 and how does it compare to other braids? I'm thinking about picking some up for frogs and pitching into cover.

I used a Chronarch D7 with Sufix 50lb Braid for awhile but I rather use that for my lighter duties.. my Curado E7 with Sufix 50lb Braid gets all that abuse in heavy cover.. and I have a Zillion Type R with Sufix 832 50lb Braid ready to use this summer as well, can't wait! :big grin:

i havent had any experience with the 50# 832 yet, its not frog season yet here. But i have fished the #20 832 with jigs and I loved it, I only used sufix performance braid until 832 came out. Its better in my opinion so im switching as I need more line.

Any quality brand as long as it's 7._ :1 - you need to get those piggies on top and keep'em there. :D

For frogging I adore, let me reiterate ADORE the Shimano metanium mg7 with a curado e7 handle and Calais 200 asv knobs with 65lb suffix on a Dobyns Champion 735C. The set up is perfectly balanced, and you can fish it literally all day with little to no shoulder/wrist/elbow fatigue.

Reel- Zillion SHS (with Steez handle) and 65# PP Braid
Rod- Custom 7'3" cut down Kistler LTA 76HC with EVA split grip, Fuji ACS reel seat wrapped with #4 Fuji Alconite Micros
I built this rod just for Frog fishing, but it pulls double duty sometimes when the Frog bite isn't on.... Love pitching Brush hogs or other bigbody baits with this rod...
