What do you all like to fish for during Winter?

Post by mprestonSEK » Sun Jan 06, 2013 7:13 pm

I would like to hear what species of fish you all target during the cold months of winter. When it gets cold where I am from, I start to target crappie and rainbow trout. This year the crappie bite has been a little tough, so I have been going for trout more often. The trout that I catch are stocker trout that get stocked every two or three weeks. And let me tell you when those things get stocked, get ready to catch some fish! Sometimes you can catch them on every cast. Lots of fun on my UL combo!

Same for me too. This time of year for me is trout time. I will still bring a bass rod just to cast around and work on some things but stocker trout are usually what I am actually catching haha

What is your UL set up that you use for trout? I have a 4'9 Fenwick Eagle GT with a size 20 Pflueger President. I really enjoy it. I like to use Trilene XT in 4lb or P-line Cxx in 6lb. My favorite lure would have to be a 1/8 ounce silver and blue Acme Kastmaster.

I'll target anything really weather permitting. If the water stays warm enough lmb's but more so crappie and gills.

I use a 5' Shimano Clarus mated with a Solstace 1500 and some 4lb P-Line Floroclear. My favorite baits would have to be the rainbow trout colored 1/8 ounce Kastmaster or a size 1 silver Mepps Aglia or Black Fury with the dressed treble.

trout fishing is worth to try during the winter.
They are relatively active in the winter compared to other species.

Chain pickerel usually provide a lot of action up here all winter long. And striped bass can be caught well into feb some winters in the surf( as long as super storms do not come along and mess up beach access like this year). We also have a wicked fall and winter trout stocking program as well.

We don't have 'winter' in SoCal.

So as others have mentioned, it's bass from January to January. Most of my biggest fish have come during this time, actually.

(Well, except when I'm ankle deep in snow in the Eastern Sierras chasing trout with the fly rod.)
