Your most versatile reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Your most versatile reel

Post by Hogsticker2 » Sun Apr 07, 2013 2:01 am

What is the most diverse reel you have used? Casting big/small, light/heavy. So your shore bound, or can only take one reel for whatever reason. Not knowing what you may have to use, maybe a spinnerbait, medium size plug, finesse jig, weightless plastic...whatever. I wouldn't know, I don't own that reel yet. I'm kinda hoping a TDZ 103M might be a cost effective option.

Steez is my main, but my Core 50MG7 can do equally as well. (TD-Z/ Ito variant or Chronarch 50MG if you're old school). :D

TDZ103 is indeed an all purpose reel. I've done everything with it.

have to agree...a set of 6:1 steez' has been my go-to the past few years and the core 50 is bad close.

imo, a 6:1 option for the core 50 would be a no-brainer.

Probably a td luna 103 (5:8 gear ratio). It can handle DT-16's (rapala) and fish 1/4 ounce baits effectively. You can use braided lines (heavy/light). You can also use mono or florocarbon lines. And you can flip or pitch with the magnetic breaking control.

I have a Fuego with the TDZ spool upgrade, 4 bearing handle, drag and spool bearing upgrade. Not sure I'll see much of an "improvement" with the TDZ. I'd like to maybe find a nice Chronarch MG and drop some cash into it. I'm thinking 300 bucks is about the most I want to invest, and mount it on an Orochi XX Flat Side Special when they become more readily available. A reel that excels in throwing awkward, non aerodynamic hard baits would be swell.

153 HSTA
Strong gear ratio, can burn and has a lot of power.
Casts lighter weights relatively well and can practically launch a big lure into space.

the chronarch 50mg would work well here.

I have a 153 HSTLA. It's a great reel, to bad I have small hands. I only use it for jigging. To bulky and heavy to wing baits all day long. I'm actually considering selling it to fund this new reel, whatever it may be.
