Straight up long distance

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Straight up long distance

Post by Hogsticker2 » Fri Jul 19, 2013 5:33 am

You tie a 1/2 oz rattle bait, tied to your favorite "distance" line, mounted on your favorite moderate stick and let her rip. Which reel makes you talk like Roland Martin - SON! This one may be a bit shocking, but I had Ian tune an Daiwa Aggrest (I know, what was I thinking). I know distant is hard to measure, but you pick an area or spot and cast to it, that's about as good as it gets. That Aggrest did some wicked $hi*! Now I got a CU201E7 back from him that I had to let go to pay some stupid bills. So now my Fuego with tdz 100m spool gets bomb duties. No Zillion or Steez on board, no round reels, just hanging out somewhere in the middle of the pack with Smalljaw. So lets not include round reels, LP only. So whats your bad boy, does he have a name? (Bear with me here, I just took my sleeping pill and am on my 2nd Guiness.

The z can let it rip, but for normal size reels I'd say my Metanium in long cast mode

My buddy uses a Gen 2 Revo Sx and I use a gen 2 Premier and w/the magnetic breaks on them they will throw a lipless longer than anything else I have used including Core 101, Metanium Xg, Steez. I hate mag breaks in general, especially Revos but they work great for this technique and dont cost a ton.I think the Sx actually will outcast the Premier to but havent tested this.

I have a factory freak 201e7 that I use as my frog rod.
Continually cast 30ft past my target and have to be really careful about spooling it with 50lb braid.

I throw a lot of 1/2-5/8 oz rattle baits like the Xcalibur XR-50 on a Curado 200DHSV mounted on a Crucial 6'10" MH power F action rod. Although the tip is rated a fast action it is still pretty soft. I have this spooled with 10 lb mono and I can cast as hard as I want and it absolutely bombs everything and literally never backlashes on me. I dont mind the heavy weight of the Curado because it's such a good performer. I love my Zillion and I'm not too much of a "weight weenie"
