Impulse Purchase - CL201DC

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Impulse Purchase - CL201DC

Post by SteveSchmelzle » Fri Jun 13, 2014 7:22 am

I own a Calais 201, but not the DC reel.

I was at my local shop today and had a CL-201DC, brand new in box. I asked what he wanted for it....and he said he had it for a long time and wanted to get rid of it....so to make an offer. I didn't even have the slightest clue of the value, so I just said $300.

He said $320 and it's yours (that is the US funds amount). So I bought it. After a quick search I see it's discontinued, which makes pricing it tough.

Also, I see it is a 7.1 gear ratio. What are you folks using that reel for? Its a little heavier, yes.

Also, man is this thing "fancy". how many dials and gizmo's does it have??? I'm wondering how user friendly it is going to be, lol.

Thanks,
Steve

edit: just saw the reel for sale on ebay...whoa, digi fishing technology sure is expensive, lol.

$320 is a steal and below what the dealer paid for it. It is actually still a current offering..the only in the Calais family. It is super friendly once you dial it in. Set the dial to "L" mode and tighten the cast control. Make casts while backing the cast control down until you're comfortable. I use mine for topwater exclusively, but have heard people using it for frogs, buzzbaits, bottom baits, and even spinnerbaits, which I am not a huge fan of. Btw, when you hear the "zing".... It's supposed to do that!

The TT review on this website could lend some advice/insight as well.

Heh. They should put that on the box or something.

That's a terrific deal. Back in my day people used to pay 300 bucks for the zing alone.

Definitely the DC model because of the... DC in the title!

Incredible reel and fantastic purchase! Can do absolutely everything and handle almost all freshwater species (no sturgeon ](*,) )
I've used mine for bass, pike, walleye, catfish, carp, PERCH, steelhead and salmon, but I really love it perfectly pitching spinnerbaits close to structure :)

Definitely take a look at the TT review (and for the calcutta DC while you're browsing).

If you find the 7:1 ratio to fast for the application you want to use it for you can get a 5.6:1 ration from the JDM Antares. I just got a set from Plat.
