Dx701s

I'm wondering if this rod would be a good choice for 1/8-1/4 ounce dropshot rigs, shakeyheads and tubes. Will be paired with a 2500 ci4+ and 6 lb fluoro. Is this rod to whippy for what I want to use it for?

Very solid backbone on it. A guy delivered mine to me at the lake. My other rod had a cracked guide, so I used it to throw 3/8 ounce heads with a zoom fluke. It was easily able to handle a couple dozen stripers from 2-5#, including dragging them into the bank. 6# line with a 2500 sized daiwa.

Forgot to mention, all that and it still has a very light top for drop shot, etc.

Everyone has their own preference in action and power but I would lean toward the 702. My DS SH rods are a 702 and 742. I think the DX742SF is the most versatile spinning rod I own. If I had only one, the 742 would be it.

Personally, I'd go with the 702SF. Even with that rod, I'd only be fishing the tube with an exposed hook presentation.

I've had the 701, 702, and 742. I'd go with the 742 if shakey heads are involved…if exposed hooks are the priority, the 702 is an amazing rod.

The 702 and 742 aren't the same with just 4" difference in length. The 742 has more backbone that the 702…the 702 is listed as a finesse rod…the 742 is not. Where as a 703/743, 704/744, 705/745 are the same minus the length, the 702/742 are rated differently. The 742 kinda bridges the gap from finesse to traditional power. If a shaky head or any buried hook point is involved, a 702 is not ideal.

I totally agree with Vinnie; my 702 is amazing but when fishing deeper waters and you need that extra power the 742 is it. I like the 701 for very light line less than 6 lb and little baits on DS with 1/8 wgt.

Ok sounds good guys I'll probably get the 702, seems to suit my needs best. One more question. What do you guys think of the reel seat on the dobyns spinning rods how the nut that locks the reel in place is in front of the reel as opposed to behind (ie megabass orochi xx and jackall poison adrena)? I put all my fingers in front of the reel when casting and retrieving (I use left hand spinning reels) and I used to have problems with my veritas spinning rod for this reason. Will I experience any issues with the dobyns? I haven't gotten a chance to hold one with a reel yet so I'm curious.

Great choice with the DX 702SF. I have never had an issue with the Dobyns reel lock nut and it doesnt bother me being up front. It has no effect on the sensitivity of the rod or my "feel" of the rod when grasping it....just my opinion of course.

Yes it will bother you just like the veritas if you hold the rod with all of your fingers in front. I would be looking for an inverse reel seat like daiwa / megabass drop shot rod. That's the one thing that holding me back from dobyns spinning rods.

I don't find the lock a distraction or uncomfortable at all. No issues here.
