Just Curous. Anybody here do Long Pole Fishing?
Just Curous. Anybody here do Long Pole Fishing?
It's been a long winter. While wasting my time on youtube. I found the idea of long pole fishing strangely attractive. This is old school fishing with very long 9-15ft pole. While majority of long pole fishing is centered on crappie fishing. The idea of vertical dipping into every nook and cranny of a piece of cover with pin point precision looks like a very efficient and fun way to fish.
Any long Poler here? Limitations? Thoughts?

I have an old 11ft tenkara rod for stream fishing. I hardly use it anymore because im afraid il break it. Im looking for get a new one soon. Preferably around $100-150.
Iv mainly use it with a ultralight float with a baited hook for trout, bass, sunfish, and suckers, but used it with flies as well.
As far as limitation goes, you risk breakage if you hook onto anything bigger than 3-5lb in cover, since the rod isnt designed to do that, and you cant really "play" the fish that well if it fights too hard. I find its very good for precise cover dipping, as long as you can land the smaller fish. Imagine you dip a fly into a hole in a lilypad field, only to have a 4lb largemough explode onto it. Not good. Fun, but also risky.

I am not talking about finesse stuff. I am talking about heavy line and heavy tackle, go down ad dirty in heavy cover. Although my interest now are vertical dipping for crappie. The same technique should be good for bass fishing.

Where are you going to get a rod that lets you lift a big bass?

All the old timers from my area call this 'dabblin' (dabbling). I don't know anyone well that does it, it seems to always be a friend of a friend thing, but it is still talked about in the southeast

I do it all the time. 711H Omen, 1.5oz tungsten and 80lb braid. Pull right into the reeds and just engage the clutch and let the weight slide the bait down through. Short little pitches over top of the reeds work too, but you don't want to get too much line out. Listen for the splash or wait for the weight. Set up, reel down and walk back. If I can't move it, my partner grabs the line and pulls it in by hand. If we still can't move it, we are going in. It's fun way to fish and effective when an edge has been pounded and the fish back off 8-10ft into the cover.

I read an old book by Roland Martin that talked about using a long pole and an inline buzzword or jitterbug for bass. I can't remember the name of the book, but it was published in the 80's
