Introduction: Since its introduction more than a decade ago, Daiwa Japan's Alphas platform has been a favorite amongst Enthusiasts worldwide. Yet the original Petite Purple Powerhouse was discontinued only after a couple of years on the market in favor of the Alphas F, Finesse Custom, R-Edition, among other variants. Domestically, the Sol was a stripped down version of the original Alphas. None had the same allure as the original. Then much to the delight of fans everywhere, Daiwa Japan brought the original back for a year or two, but by then the magic was lost and again it was discontinued.
Nice review Cal. I love my Alphas/Sols/Zondas, and the SV didn't disappoint. After the usual upgrades the reel is outstanding. Daiwa going to make a mint selling spools and gears. How if they just would update the OG Zillion (103SV).
Good review, but did you accidentally leave out a chunk of the casting section?
Just says you tied on a light weight bait- no mention of how it did, casting, other baits, distances, compared to other reels/alphas, etc.

Yeah kind of surprised there wasnt much mention on the casting part other than it cast the little guy well. That is the greatest thing about this reel, its casting ability.
Im sure the word is out on how bad a$$ this reel really is. I know I am dang proud of this purchase. A RCS 90mm handle with 4 bearings and some RCS cork knobs, this thing is hella sweet!
I didn't even realize the level wind moved when pulling line till I read this. I've been enjoying casting damn near everything with this I guess I never paid attention. I think the review came so fast before they get bogged down with Icast, and this little gem couldn't wait.

If the lineguide doesn't disengage on drag does that also mean it doesn't disengage on casting?

I wondered the same thing, especially when the review scored the braking system as only 4/5. Was that because the braking was inconsistent, because it reduced overall distance compared to other braking systems, because it was hard to dial in with a change of lures, or what?

I wondered the same thing, especially when the review scored the braking system as only 4/5. Was that because the braking was inconsistent, because it reduced overall distance compared to other braking systems, because it was hard to dial in with a change of lures, or what?
Probably because you have to leave room for a higher score for something like the 3D SV reels and the DC Shimanos. Also no numbers on the brake knob could have played a part.

Also in this boat. I was very curious about the overall range casting and pitching. Also does it behave well for skipping lures with stiff line? Just a few things I would have liked to have known. Otherwise great review. This reel is one I've been keeping an eye on. Hopefully icast reveals something about a usdm one.

The Curado 200 I's braking system was scored a 5 despite having an "almost hidden...SVS cast control adjustment knob" and Zander's observation that "the knob rotation was a bit tight, and a clicker would definitely add a nice audible feedback during adjustments without actually having to look down at the dial." One of the reels generated a squealing from the brakes that had to be quieted down with oiling (as has been the reported experience of some TT members as well). http://tackletour.com/reviewshimanocura ... erpg2.html Still, that reel's braking system was scored as 5/5. One has to wonder what deficiencies were found in the Alphas SV braking system that held it to 4/5.
Cal, could you please give us more information about the Alphas SV's casting and braking performance?

If I didn't have 40lb braid on mine I woulda ran it on my X7 Super Elseil last night and tried that. I was busy casting weightless robo worms and 3" Senkos on my Steez SV105 spool on my XX EMTF
