NRX comparison 854 / 894
Ok, so I have just bought an NRX 843, I can throw the 3/4 stuff on it but if feels a little soft to me. I guess I will be looking at picking up a hvy. I would just go 894 but I also wanted to throw some bigger spinnerbaits on it too. Not sure about spinnerbaits on the 7'5 rod. A midnight special is about the biggest I throw and I don't throw it that often. Casted it a bit on the 843 yesterday, it will do the job but still feel like I need a little more power?
I have heard the 894 is actually a shade heavier than the 854 in terms of power.
Any imput?
Also what are you guys mainly throwing on the 843?
I also have an 852 and 853 / 893
mainly use the 852 for shaky head and 853 /893 for small jigs
Thanks!

Re: NRX comparison 854 / 894
I use my 843's for 3/8-3/4oz moving baits(spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and mainly big chatterbaits). I needed a step up for when the grass gets real thick and went with the 854. It's not as powerful as the 894 but more than the 843 for sure. Started using the 873 and it is awesome. Feels like it is between the 854 and 894 and has a great action for keeping fish hooked on those single hook moving baits. I do seem to prefer the 843 to them all though, and wish they would bring out the 844 in NRX.

I can tell you, for my style of jig and t-rig fishing, the 854 doesn't have near the power I had hoped. To me it's a 3/8oz jig Rod when I fish a 1/2oz jig+ trailer the Rod just doesn't have enough "oomph" for my liking. Scary sensitive though. I'm currently struggling to find a place for my 854jwr as I actually prefer fishing my 7'2" H tatula over it. Weird I know. Just my two cents. I'm in looooove with my 852jwr though for hair jigs.

Thanks for the replies
Looks like I'll be leaning toward the 894

Thats interesting. I feel the same about the 893, it's max is 3/8+trailer and I got the 854 to use for 1/2oz. It works great. It's not as stout as my XX PP, but it definitely feels like it handles 1/2oz perfectly. I like the 854 for Topwater too.Demoman wrote:I can tell you, for my style of jig and t-rig fishing, the 854 doesn't have near the power I had hoped. Re: NRX comparison 854 / 894
I was thinking the nrx854jwr could work awesome in a heavy cover buzz bait, spook, or popper situation where you would wAnt to hustle fish away from lay downs or keep them coming up and above submerged grass. It's just such a stretch to spend so much money on a Rod like an NRX then delegate it to topwater duty ya know? I'm certain it would handle 1/2oz spinnerbaits and chatterbaits well too, but I'm thinking as a cover-jig Rod it's just not for me. I'm not sure if maybe the same Rod in an xtra fast taper might be more suiting to my style as the taper is sweet but a touch slow from what I am used to for jigs. Looks like I got to get me money saved up for a 5power NRX now. Dang'it manTeal101 wrote:Thats interesting. I feel the same about the 893, it's max is 3/8+trailer and I got the 854 to use for 1/2oz. Re: NRX comparison 854 / 894
I know the feeling, my 854 spent a good bit of the summer slinging Shower Blows, but it works awesome for it. I tend to fish the outside edges of reeds with it mostly, some timber here and there. The lake I fish most of the spring is covered in laydowns and I worked out the 893 in it hard. The XX PP was better suited, but I liked the NRX's sensitivity better. The 854 was my answer, we'll see how it goes. I almost got the 894, but I wanted something a little shorter when working in and around lots of cover. I may still get the 894.Demoman wrote:I was thinking the nrx854jwr could work awesome in a heavy cover buzz bait, spook, or popper situation where you would wAnt to hustle fish away from lay downs or keep them coming up and above submerged grass. Re: NRX comparison 854 / 894
I don't tend to think of the 894 as a moving bait rod but it has capability for any single hook bait in water with cover. I've thrown buzzbaits just a bit with this rod and casting was great. I don't know that I got bit enough to comment on hook up ratio's. If you are in open water with an 894 it could be called overpowering the fish.
For those that recall the loved GLX MBR844, I have tested the 894 vs. 844 and the 894 is alittle stouter rod. Likely a 4.2-4.3 if the 844 were a true 4.0 power.

Hey DavidSA, not trying to hijack the tread, but when you mentioned the glx844 you hit a sweet spot. I've paired mine with a calais 200 and it's still my favorite pike combo. Caught a lot of "jaws" with them. One rod I'll never get rid of.
Re: NRX comparison 854 / 894
The 844 is a classic for sure. I know many guys have never known or forgotten the original GLX MBR series now that NRX is so popular but those were some great action and power rods.
If you like the 844 I think you must try and 894 unfortunately. The action on the 894 is just a little better and the leverage is better in a big way yet the rod is lighter. I fished the 894 down in Florida one week with Senkos and burning speed worms over grass. My hook-up ratio for the 894 was just exceptional. I concluded that it had more tip then the 844 yet more power in the butt section. Well, a test with a 1.5oz punching weight showed I was wrong. The tip deflection on the 894 less then on the 844. I was shocked because to fish the rod you would think it was more forgiving.
both great rods and in some instances a 7ft rod better then 7'5. However, for most duty the 894 would win out.
Maybe they will release that 844 in a NRX model

Re: NRX comparison 854 / 894
I like the old MBR GLXs for bigger moving baits, but if you are dead set on a heavy NRX for this, you may want to look at the 873 CRR...7'3" may be easier to handle, its a hair softer than the 894 (but more powerful than the 893, 854, etc) and has a slower taper than the 894 as well, which I would like for a spinnerbait/buzzbait rod...
