YOUR favorite jerkbait stick
Re: YOUR favorite jerkbait stick
Yes, I am fishing in what we call "large water" - a big river. So it is not so much about specific locations, but "combing areas". And extra length comes in handy. Even from a boat.
And one gets used to jerk "side-ways" pretty easily. I know a seasoned fisherman, who uses 10 feet rod, but he mostly fishes from riverbank, so just needs the casting distance.
For my large jerks I even have an 8 feet Loomis Swimbait. Not that it is better while jerking than my 6,8 feet Burroughs, but it casts those jerks to sensible distances. Specially for the deeping diving minnows and occasional cranks. They spend more time at their working depth that way.

Re: YOUR favorite jerkbait stick
It is not that terrible actually.
Because with a long rod you don't need to swing it the same amount of distance, than with a short one. So the eventual movement by hand is rather gentle. But you have to be much more precise about your movement. No to swing too much.
For these situations - "large water" with a boat - even professional anglers of Russia (we practically don't have dedicated professionals here in Latvia; the market is too small for that) advise 8 feet rods. No less than 7.
And surely you have to pick the lightest rods from available offering. St.Croix is pretty much ruling in our area. (Among advanced anglers, of course.)

Tatula 7' medium regular action... At the moment.
Re: YOUR favorite jerkbait stick
Use to use the black Cumara a 6'8M XF, but those finicky hooks on the Vision 110+1's were bending out after catching 2 1/2-4 3/4lb Smallies. I never lost fish mind you but always had 1-2 trebles with 1-2 points bend out of whack, and I was using 10lb Reaction Fluoro and a light drag.
Switched to the Megabass XX "Jerkbait Special" and at the same length and 2x softer bend on a recent trip I caught 2 smallies each 2-2 1/2lbs and both fish fought good and I didn't bend hooks this time. Both fish went for good runs under the boat and this is where I thought the rod was going to break but it went into a deep parabolic bend for a second. Amazing rod.
New fav jerk bait stick is the MB XX JB Special.

been thinking of possibly using this rod for jerks...is there enough tip to work the bait efficiently? i'm always afraid of it being too softPCSnooker wrote:Tatula 7' medium regular action... At the moment.
Re: YOUR favorite jerkbait stick
Seems to be just right action wise to me. It's faster than my dobyns 706cb which it replaced. Could never get used to cranking sticks they've always felt too noodly to me and don't really suit my casting/ fishing style. I feel like Daiwa really nailed these regular action Tatula rods. Not to fast and not too slow. The "high strung" nature of the blank feels great in this rod aswell.Chode wrote:been thinking of possibly using this rod for jerks...is there enough tip to work the bait efficiently? i'm always afraid of it being too softPCSnooker wrote:Tatula 7' medium regular action... Im interested in the Zodias Med 6'10" rod.
I wonder how the performance will be and spec wise it seems like it would be a great jb rod.

Rod is faster than the Expride 6'10M more similar to the Adrena 6'10M. Should be fine for jerkbaits if you like a faster tip rod.goldrod wrote:Im interested in the Zodias Med 6'10" rod.

Re: YOUR favorite jerkbait stick
Ok Everybody can get a laugh now but I'm using a Loomis DSR822 C. Yep I know its a drop shot rod but for me it's excelent for jerkbaits. Short handle Ex Fast tip. I finally settled with this one and I love it !!!

Well being I started this thread, I guess I'll finish it. Many sticks later - 7 ft. medium power high mod MHX popping blank cut to 6'8. So far so good. Nice flex to the rod under load. Tip is just fast enough. Spiral wrapped to the left. Love the Alphas SV so much, had to get another. I like the size of the Zillion Type R drag star.
