Just Ordered an NRX 854C! What Reel?
Just Ordered an NRX 854C! What Reel?
Thanks to hennesy's post in the hot deals section I couldn't resist! I plan on using this for pitching 3/8 to 1/2 ounce jigs with 17 pound fluorocarbon…. I was going to put my T3 on the rod but I would like to see what others are using/recommend for this.

Can't go wrong with a Zillion of some sort.

I threw a few cast on my buddies Metanium XG and 854c and it was a very nice setup. 854 balances better than I thought and overall setup felt light.

I use the IP79L with 60lb FX2 on my 854c. 1/2oz jigs and Shower Blow Shorties on it mostly.

Why not the T3? I could feel mine flex only when punching or frogging and that was only in real heavy cover.

I have Steez and Metaniums on mine. 2 of each.....either one is perfect in my hands.KDogg14 wrote:Thanks to hennesy's post in the hot deals section I couldn't resist! I'm a fan of any of the Steez platforms on the NRXs...but also nothing wrong with the Core/Metanium reels either, obviously

I was going to get an 854 and pair with the Met DC. Still in shopping mode so no personal experience to offer yet. I agree with others that any Steez or Met would be ideal.

I personally like the Steez but, the Metanium's work really well if you prefer Shimano.

Steez or Metanium

I'm curious. Is the steez braking as good as the Met????? Many years ago I fished both Diawa and Shimano side by side but the braking on the Diawa product was suspect with buzzbaits or honestly anything where wind could hit the bait. The daiwa would win a casting contest with a 3/4oz lipless crank. Has anything changed?
I now own only Abu and Shimano and the abu will generally outcast most shimano's; the met being very close to the Abu. For casting in and around wind or pitching, the shimano wins hands down.
The Met to me is the first Shimano reel I have owned that is almost as long as the best the competition has to offer yet preserves outrageous pitching and has great braking.
I fished plastics on the Met for a week in Florida with light braid and never had a single backlash that I can recall. Would I be able to say the same thing with a Steez????

Another Steez or Metanium vote. I can't say as I have a strong preference for either but if I had to pick I'd go with the Metanium HG or XG.

I'm a novice, I have been fishing for six months. I have used the Jdream 7.9 and Steez SV103 from Daiwa and the Met and Met DC from Shimano and I have found the Steez SV103 to be the most controlled. I would be tempted to try the Daiwa SV 105 limited for even better control in braking.

I'd wait for the new Metanium MGL. That thing just looks awesome. The spool is drilled out and lighter than before and it also uses 4 breaks instead of 6. You'll want a 7 something ratio for that bottom contact, maybe even an 8 something.
