Necessity of friction ring in Shimano spinning reels
Necessity of friction ring in Shimano spinning reels
One of my crappie reels (Stradic 1000 FH) bound up and I did a complete tear down finding the old black friction ring (PN 7845) dry rotted, etc...Was going to order more but then I was talking to a buddy who owns a tackle store, he said he has removed them and fished the reel without....and they seem to perform better/smoother..Thoughts??

I also had an issue with my Sustain FE. Reel repair man removed the friction ring and this solved the problem. He also told me that this part is basically unnecessary and the reel functions just as well without it. So why is it there?
Re: Necessity of friction ring in Shimano spinning reels
I was asked the same thing by a buddy yesterday after discussing the issue...My best guess, without knowing any better, is that maybe the friction ring keeps the handle/rotor/spool from creeping unnecessarily..?? The big question is....Can I figure out the 7 screws, even with the schematic, and get it back together correctlyBassmar wrote:I also had an issue with my Sustain FE. I may be wrong but I think the friction ring keeps the bell from rotating and flipping during a hard cast.

Re: Necessity of friction ring in Shimano spinning reels
It seems like you guys have got it figured out. Unfortunately, that part is older and out of stock. You may be able to find one somewhere online, but it will take some searching.
As you've already noted, you will be able to use the reel without the friction ring, but it will create the opportunity for extra dirt to collect inside the reel. I would suggest to keep an eye on it and clean the reel regularly.
Thanks for your question!

Yeah he his right. It is part of the rotor brake to stop the rotor turning during casting and tripping the bail.arrowslinger1 wrote:I may be wrong but I think the friction ring keeps the bell from rotating and flipping during a hard cast.

Thanks arrowslinger1 and BARRAMANIAC! That is definitely a valid point. The bail can trip on a hard cast, sending your broke off lure into the lake or trees.
