NRX 854 for moving baits?

Post by bigfruits » Wed Oct 12, 2016 7:29 am

Id love to see a NRX MBR 844. If it was similar to the NRX 843 and 842 compared to their GLX cousins it would feel almost .5 power lighter in the top half compared to the GLX 844. I own the GLX 844 but i no longer use it for bottom contact and it would get a lot more use if it was just a little lighter with moving baits.

The NRX 854 is a fast action. I own the 873 CRR and i should have tried some single hook moving baits before posting this, but it seems that it would be a little too stiff for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, swim and bladed jigs, lipless cranks...

Would I be happy with the NRX 854 for these applications? Maybe I should wait to see whats said about the new GLX 844.

I have had surprising good luck with the 894 for anything single hook. Believe it or not, a 5 power Powell rod has become my go to buzzbait rod. Your 873 has far more utility in it then you might think. Somehow the longer tips on rods tend to hide the power and action a little.

I think you can get away with single hook moving lures like swim jigs and Spinnerbaits with a NRX 854c. Compare to my NRX 894c it had a noticeable softer tip and lighter in power. They are not the same rod with different lengths at all.

that is my understanding. a little lighter than the 873CRR.

I was throwing a Sammy 85 topwater and a spinnerbait with small trailer and trailer hook tonight on the NRX 893. I would imagine both rigs up around 5/8oz but did not weight either. If I did not see extra long casts, I'd swear I had my old GLX 843 in hand. But the best discovery of the night was throwing a strike king rage tail soft plastic toad with just the lure and a stout hook. I could really get this relatively light rig out there but with light braid set 2 very nice hooks.

xfast action and all, the 893 is far better with moving baits then I had imagined. I could honestly see displacing the 843 and adding a 893.

I feel the 844 has more give in the tip section of the rod compared to the 854. The 873 seems like an entire step more powerful to me, like an 845 or 855 for comparisons sake.

Slightly lighter than the 844...a chunk lighter than the 873...Like what you would think a full power or so would feel like...give or take
