Pflueger Patriarch 9530 for UL?

Post by jtgibso1 » Fri Oct 28, 2016 1:53 am

I'm looking into the possibility of building an UL rod for the few times i do some stream trout fishing with the old man... I have a pflueger patriarch 9530 and am wondering if that would suffice as the reel for this setup?
I'm thinking about a rod in the 5'8" - 6'3" range that would handle baits from say 1/16-1/4oz.
just curious if anyone else would use this reel in that situation or would you be looking at something more along the 25 size that pflueger offers?
thanks in advance!

I'd say that the 30 is fine...weighs 5.2 oz. and line capacity in mono is 140/4 120/6 90/8...which is about the same as Shimano 1000 size capacity of 2/270 4/140 6/110...a comparable Stradic weighs 6.9 oz.

that's kind of what i was thinking. it's a really light little reel.

I had the 30 and have the 25. The 25 is awesome for UL work, light as a feather. The 30 will suffice as well, definitely a featherweight for its size.

i saw the 25 size last night at cabela's and it's a beauty. but even at the sale price of $129 i couldn't quite justify it for an UL rig that won't see a ton of use. figured if it would work out i'd just use the 30 that i already have which i basically stole from Dick's sporting goods 2 years ago for $79!

I've happily used 4 lb. nylon mono and 6 lb. Nanofil on a Patriarch 9530. On mine, frankly, the drag is too wimpy for heavier lines.

I tried one this past summer and used it once... and then sold it on ebay. I did not line the way the line was laid on the reel, it over lapped my line and made it impossible to cast. I used Nanofil... I would buy a Stradic Ci.

i don't have a Patriarch, but I have some Supreme and Supreme XT's in the 25 size. The newer ones have a "slow oscillation" gearing which helps with the line lay. Still not as good as Shimano worm gear, but better than before.

the problem of stacking high or low can be fixed by adding or removing spool shims. unfortunately, pflueger doesn't include any shims and assumes they are perfect out of the box (which most aren't). on the 25 size, i used some shims for an old box of Shimano Symetre 750 shims which worked perfectly. you need to play around a bit to get it just right which is a bit of a pain, but worth it in the end.

i think they are some of the best reels available for the money.
