Retro style rod

Post by Smalleyez » Sat Apr 07, 2018 7:42 am

I'm looking for suggestions for a rod that will match my Abu 1500C in terms of an "old style" look. I have it mounted on a delightful Mattman custom, but it just doesn't look right on a rod without a fore-grip. I'd like to find a rod (2-piece would be great) with a more bulbous cork fore-grip as I think it would look great with the old style round reel. It doesn't have to be a super-performance rod because I just chuck small plugs and spoons with this rig.

The Japanese dudes that fish those mostly use old pistol grip rods. They seem to favor jdm fenwicks as well.
Do a hashtag search on instagram for 'surfacegame' and go down those rabbit holes, you'll find tons of rad options & ideas.
Like this one- https://instagram.com/p/BgdZBYpgerr/

You could also buy an old handle & have mattman put it put on a newer blank.
A search on eBay for 'pistol grip rod' will give you tons of awesome results, like: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre ... 2268898371

Other searches like vintage casting rod, vintage bass rod, vintage fishing rod handle, etc will also provide a wealth of ideas & options.

Geez, now I wanna build one

There's also a Japanese company who builds vintage style rods, exactly the kind your looking for. But I'm blanking on the name(pun intended \:D/ ).
Been a few threads here, and even some for sale in the classifieds. Someone will remember & chime in.

Edit it's Robelson. http://robelson.co.jp

You have great timing! I'm looking for a rod for my Pagani Lotus right now too. I'm lost though, this vintage stuff is completely foreign to me...

This is not an enthusiast rod at all, but has a very retro feel to it and might match up well with your reel:

I'm pretty sure Christian was a member here a long time ago. I haven't caught up with him in a dog's age. He was quite active on what you could probably call the German version of TackleTour.

All good suggestions.

Truthfully I’m not seeing what I’m envisioning, so perhaps I should have Mattman build it.

Do you have any skills or I mean is can you render it somehow via old school media two paper or possibly on a computer maybe list out all your components explain your build a little bit maybe but yeah definitely go custom to I've yet to do that but I hear nothing but good things but Megabass has got me by the balls

Actually what I would like to see if you do do custom maybe try to get two solid peepz depending on who you are to build singular cohesive design where they both have input and construct one bad ace rod or two type of rods and you can choose. that would be slick!!

Also on the pistol grip note although it's not my style I definitely would like to see The Count Dooku Style, modified slant bridge kind of sort of ;)

Post a photo of what you're envisioning. Search on eBay for vintage fishing rod will surely come up with something.
I know what you're talking about with the bulbous foregrip, I've just never seen them on a baitcast rod.
St croix uses them on their recent trout line spinning rods...

Loomis has a similar on their trout spinning rods.

Plenty to be found on vintage spinning rods too. But on a baitcaster, I feel(depending on how low the reel seat is), you risk that foregrip coming into contact with your line.
