Shimano Conquest 101?

Post by BRONZEBACK32 » Thu Aug 02, 2018 12:12 pm

Hello, been using my 101 for a bit and its was the smoothest reel ever, now it grinds and it feels like the gears
are shot, I took it apart and cleaned the reel and it was super smooth again but only for about two outings and now
its buzzing again while reeling... :-s

I also have a 101hg I got from Japan a few years ago and its still super smooth.

It probably needs gears.

I've only had it for about 6 months..

Can they go bad that fast or maybe I just got a bad gear set?

Have you tried cleaning the bearings(pinion, driveshaft, Xship) and ARB? I get reels from friends to clean all the time that think they need new gear sets and it's usually just the bearings needed cleaning. With what you said about it smoothing out for a short time after regreasing the gears, it definitely could be a gear issue, but worth a try to clean the bearings and grease them. Really shouldn't have gear issues with these reels for years, unless you fish like the "pros" do and use the reel like a winch. Then I could see problems.

I checked all the bearings and everything, I even swapped gears from my 101hg to my 101 and it was good to go.

Its defiantly the gears, I also take really good care of my reels and don't use them hard...

Cool, just checking. It's a common problem with the bearings down here in the saltwater. Sounds like you've got it narrowed down.

If the reel is only 6 months old, send it in with a copy of your receipt for warranty repair.

I turn them around in 48 hours or less. Plus it will get a full cleaning and service. I think I might be a little better at making the Conquest perform than you ;)

No worries, I will just order some new gears, I got a lot of HH parts on this reel.
5 days to get to you, 2 days for turn around then 4-5 days back...thats almost two weeks to long

The only way you can make it smoother then me is if you polished the gears before adding new ones :-$ :big grin:

There are many ways to make the reel have a very light rotation while having good durability. I was just trying to help you out with a warranty repair.

I know and I appreciate it, I was just messing with you above.

This forum wouldn't be the same without you.

Thanks Bantam.
