Spoon storage and hook swaps...

How small is your rod and how light is your line? It's not about the size of your tackle, but how you work it. Come share your Ultralight and Bait Finesse System (BFS) fishing success here!

Spoon storage and hook swaps...

Post by Craigthor » Sat Dec 29, 2018 4:44 pm

I’ve been trying different cases for storing my spoons and had found a case from Smith Japan but it is discontinued at this time. Had completely forgotten about Tacky Fly Boxes and found they had a new box out https://tackyflyfishing.com/flydrophobic-SD/. It makes a killer spoon case and I have ordered another as I want to add a few more spoon choices and this one is a little over packed now.

I also really prefer the Cultiva brand of hooks so I placed an order with Jun at Japan Tackle and received them today.

I spent the time to sort my spoons and label the hook bags for future change outs.

All done and returned to the case.

I’m waiting for Chris to get some other colors of the 0.8g spoons into stock to add to the aresenal.

Thanks, I’ve split them into 2 boxes now so they have some room to breathe.

Question regarding using these spoons with such light line......do you feel a split ring or oval split would be a good option to tying directly to the spoon?

I would think so ... I don't even like tying to split rings with small diameter line, I prefer to tie around a single diameter of round stock like found in a snap. Just one of my quirks I suppose, but I feel it's a stronger knot.

Here is my setup, I use Sunline Small Game PE .4 tied direct to a 9kg Micro Swivel with a 10-12 turn Trilene Knot. I’ve had no slippage, the braid doesn’t hinder fish biting, I’m able to get out of snags I would loose with lighter line, also this is the second swivel after 10 trips only had to put a new one on as I got snagged under some rocks in a deep sharp bend pool and had to cut the line.

Micro Swivels:

Works great, super strong and swapping spoons out couldn’t be easier. Also when its cold not having to tie on tiny spoons is great.

Do spoons twist and thus need a swivel? I have snaps that is 1/3 the size - but without swivel.

Thanks.

Spoons have a tendanacy to roll and wobble on the retrieve. You can use plain snaps though the swivels help eliminate line twist. A lot of the spoons actions are going to be based on the shape of the spoon itself. The Smith D-S spoons I use have a habit of wide wobbles on slow retrieves but speed up the retrieve seem to track more straight with a tight roll.

Love it! Just got a tenkara rod from tenkarabum and couldn't resist buying a couple of the 0.4g Daiwa Presso Vega spoons. No ultralight spinning gear to throw slightly larger spoons yet, I need to stop looking at this forum haha

Chris has some great stuff, we’ve fished together a few years back when I was fishing Keiryu gear. I only have a small spoon addiction.

Just shy of 1/2” from edge to edge (top of eye to bottom of snap)

I use snaps or swivels, depending on the lure. Lupin spoons will roll if you retrieve them too fast, they wobble nicely at the correct speed. I have one of those Presso wallets, works perfectly of course. It's tiny and holds plenty.
