Help choosing NRX

I am looking for a rod for 1/4 to 3/8 t rigs and am trying to decise between the 893 and 873 or just get both. Which is most sensitive and what are some other uses you guys are finding for these two models or what other models do you recommend?

For 1/4 to 3/8 t rigs hands down the 893C, crazy crazy sensitive. Honorable mention to the 853c as well.

Anything over 3/8 i would go 894C over the 873c

Tend to agree with jpmoney 893 is great 3/8 and under, especially with senkos or speed worms etc... 1/2 and up head on over the the 894.

The 873 is a conundrum, in a good way. It's obviously a great Carolina Rig rod, but it can do so much more. It existed before the 89x series, so folks have tired plenty of baits on it, mostly all with good results. You're probably aware, it's not a true 3 power, really more like a 4 power. It's a Fast vs XFast, so has some more forgiveness built in and can protect lighter lines than say the 894. It's a good do-all rod in the NRX line, ie if you wanted one MH rod to do a lot, the 873CRR would fit the bill (similar to a Dobyns Champion XP 734C, another rod that excels at many things. the 873 excels at jigs and worms, and I actually use it quite a bit for 7" curly tails, Skinny Dipper swimbaits, and the like. It has a wide weight range so will handle a variety of jig fishing as well. There are rods in the NRX lineup that do things better, but probably not one that can do as much as the 873 can overall. IMO it sits between the JWR and MBR, kind of a middle ground.

So I would do good getting an 893 and 873. Sounds like I wouldn’t be duplicating the same rod correct?

if you chose to get both rods they will not really duplicate each other. The 893 has a softer tip over the 873. I really like my 893 for 1/4- 3/8oz jigs in open water situations. I have thrown swimbaits on jig heads, heavier tubes, light wobble heads, shakey heads, and so on with the 893. the 873 is more powerful than the 893 in my hands and i love it for pitching, football jigs, skinny dippers around grass. they are both versatile in their own respective ways for me anyway. if you are going to be around heavy cover go 873 more open water go 893 if you get both thats a win win for sure.

For 1/4 - Conquest 903.

I'm probably mostly duplicating what has been said, but wanted to give another vote for the NRX 893 here for texas rigs. I own the 873, 893, and 894 and they all do things a little bit differently. I almost always have a Texas Rig on the 893 and a 1/2 oz jig on the 894. Then depending on what type of fishing I'm doing for the day I'd adjust the 873 to one of those techniques. I also use the 873 for a lot of football jigs. In terms of power it definitely goes 893 < 873 < 894. If I were fishing more in cover I'd make that 894 my second choice, if I didn't get into much cover then that 873 would be my second choice. 893 & 894 probably give you more range though. 894 is also a great football jig rod. Either way I'd get the 893 as I think it is such a great rod, super sensitive and for some reason I rarely lose any fish on it compared to other rods. But we are also talking about 3 of the best rods for jigs and texas rigs I've ever fished so kind of splitting hairs and gets to be a your personal preference. Maybe you like using rods that seem more underpowered for certain techniques as it may increase some sensitivity (like using a 893 for a 1/2 oz jig) I don't do it, but I know people that do? Maybe you like knowing you have enough backbone to get them out of the thick stuff no matter what cover you are fishing. Everyone is different.

for your weights, a true 3 power (803, 853, 893). my weapon is the 893 but I owned multiples in the 803 for many years.

When I get above 3/8 I go 894 or when I am tossing a lighter rig into heavy cover.

A 5/16 bullet weight and a 5/16 ounce piece of plastic put you at the upper limit of a 893, at 5/8oz. Bulky creature baits can be a 1/2oz of plastic alone. I would go 894. I use mine for 3/16-3/8oz Trigs, most often 1/4 and 5/16oz with a craw style creature bait. 3/8oz is pushing it for me.
