BFS and Trout baitcast combos
Re: BFS and Trout baitcast combos
Craigthor, beautiful combos. I tried to get the Smith Be Sticky 5’7” from amazon.co.jp but for some reason they will not ship that rod.

Re: BFS and Trout baitcast combos
I never thought I'd purchase a bfs setup because I bass fish and never saw the point. But now that I recently got into trout fishing my interest is piqued. What is your suggestion for stream trout fishing with spinners, mainly number 9 and 15 panther Martins? The waters I fish routinely kick out browns in the upper teens, and there is a chance for a true whopper in the 7+ pound category. Thanks for any input. Oh, and I'm looking for a shorter rod due top overhanging cover and foliage.
Re: BFS and Trout baitcast combos
I mainly use spinners for (sea run) brown trout - Mepps/Ilba/Mapso size 2 and 3 plus some Panther Martin size 4 and 6. All spinners weigh approximately 3 to 7 gram (1/8 to 1/4 oz). My biggest trout was 28.5” (8+ lbs I guess) and they get much bigger, which I hope to find using BFS/trout casting gear. I use thin braided line, mostly, so a moderate (or mod-fast) action rod is quite important to me.
As noted earlier, I have been really happy with the Daiwa Wise Stream 62LB, which is rated for 2-10 gram lures.
I also have the Major Craft Fine Tail, which does not suit my style of fishing as well as the Daiwa rod. I prefer slightly longer rods with a little backbone for the big-ish fish I encounter. I do experience double digit numbers of fish on rare trips, with my best day giving 4 fish around the 25” mark. That day I used the Daiwa Wise Stream and it handled the challenge with style - I felt in control despite the short trout rod.
I am slightly hooked on trying the Smith rods (Craigthor), esp. the 5’7”, and the Daiwa Silver Creek AGS (Hobie-Wan).
For you using bigger PMs (3/8 oz plus), perhaps arod from Tenryu og Palms

I seem to recall that Palms also make a medium power 7 foot trout casting rod. How short do you want it? Difficult to find short (<6 foot) and m-mh power (3/8 oz+) trout rods.

The Smiths are an amazing rod, haven’t got to test the 4’3” version but the 4’7” did everything an then some when I went out last weekend. They are rated from 1-7g I use a lot of 5g spoons, currently building a box of 5g spoons I’ll have more on that as everything arrives.lifeofRiley wrote:I never thought I'd purchase a bfs setup because I bass fish and never saw the point. Its new and that was the first time out and I love it, very easy to get dialed in and cast 1/8oz Inline Spinners, spoons and jerkbaits very far. I have 12lb Gliss on it and this will be the last time I use Gliss, its very slick and cast nice but I snagged up with a 8lb fluoro leader it still broke the 12lb Gliss and not the leader. Other than that It was a good day of fishing.Dalleinf wrote:Very nice. Thx!!! Aldebaran mg, 7.0 gear swap, avail 918tr spool (6.24g with vbs), currently on edge inshore 6'6" light powered rod. Can cast true 1g jigs 30-40 feet on 4lb mono.
Re: BFS and Trout baitcast combos
Wow, pretty combo and impressive numbers. I have mostly used my Daiwas for the past year or two. Perhaps I should do more with my Shimanos.

MS-X 65L/BF+SV Light
This combo is going to get a LOT of use this year. Too bad it's in the 30's today...
This is the way.

How do those rods cast? I'm thinking of a Finetail 502L myself.Craigthor wrote:

Amazing, they act a lot like a glass rod reacts. Load up great and can cast as far as I’d need. Haven’t tried to bomb with them as I don’t have the space anyways. Also great for getting into really tight quarters.poisonokie wrote:[
