Spool Lip Chipping

Hi all, I have a RCS G1 1016 SV spool and the lip of the spool appears to be slowly chipping away, has anyone have this issue with any of their daiwa spools before? Thanks.

Yes, saltwater use, I didn't think these rcs spools would corrode away, all my other daiwa spools have never done this.

All it takes is a tiny ding in the anodized layer, and salt will eat it up quick. Those spools are very thin, so it doesnt take much corrosion to compromise them.

Its the perfect scenario.

Aluminium, stainless Steel, saltwater and a retention device being braid / spool edge & body...

May pay to soak into your braid some Salt Away or similar - the Starbrite product is awesome. I just apply it to the spool as I'm spooling it up halfway and to the top it seeps into the pile and any saltwater that gets in 'in theory' should be combated... How's that going to help the edge? Well hard to say - but you could apply lanolin to the inner facings of the spool and edge carefully via fine paintbrush and water of any type will not stick to the hydrophobic layer.

It’s always made me wonder if some magnesium was alloyed into some spools to reduce weight, some spools are definitely more prone to this than others but I guess the quality of the anodising could be the issue too. Also noticed it on the friction ring for the non drive side plate on the Chronarch Ci4.

Depends on the series of the Alloy they used in the MGL... I'm sure I read up on it a year or so ago but couldn't find the specific document on the alloy.

All I know is all spools will corrode under specific circumstances and that is being used in saltwater - there is oy one honest way to combat it by caring for the spool.

Hmmm, the ease with which some spools corrode compared to others being used and treated exactly the same tells me that perhaps a 5xxx type alloy may have been used in their creation. I do fish saltwater and my reels receive a wash down after each use and and oil up every couple of months including spool out to treat the inner pinion bearing (I hate having to change them out on my OG Zillions and Alphas’ with those poxy re-engaging springs). The Chronarch Ci4 still started showing signs of corrosion after 12 months and it always began right on the outer edge of the spool, I was careful to try and notice any salt crystals in this area but nada. Then began having trouble getting the nondrive side plate off and noticed similar corrosion on the friction ring. I saw it was covered exhaustively on another thread here, got the replacement spool flogged it off and bought the new Chronarch

Have you tried coating your spool with an automotive clear coat, like KBS Diamond Coat, before you use it?

spool is done for, gonna use it until it fully disintegrates. I only fished this spool in saltwater, I thought it would be able to hold up to the abuse. Might try a zillion sv spool next and see if that one holds up better. I like to test the spools to its full potential aka see how long it will last fishing in saltwater before it becomes unusable. To be honest from all the testing, I probably used it in freshwater 5 times, and 100+ sessions in saltwater with regular maintenance, so overall I still give it an A+ on the spool and for the price. Then I decided to test something else out and I didn't wash the spool at all in maybe 10+ and the bearing outlasted the spool lol. I had the spool for like 2 years.
