Curado 70 spool tension loosening on its own

Post by ZJKorman » Sun Sep 08, 2019 7:00 pm

This year the spool tension knob on my curado 71 has begun to loosen on its own. I can make maybe 10 casts before I have to check it and tighten it back down. It's never been cross threaded and the o ring is still intact. Any suggestions?

I agree. I use plumber's teflon tape, too.

Replace the knobs O Ring (BNT 5320), or even use a silicone variety. Ive noticed on my Curado K that it's done the exact same thing...

The hardest part is getting the same OD, ID and thickness of the O Ring and also a chemically stable variety that won't swell with some greases and oils.

I tried getting one for my 1979 Abu Ambassadeur 6500 C and my mate who works in a O Ring and seal supply shop had to send me a dozen of them and one narrowly fit...

A lot of times you can remove and reinstall the o-ring and it will give more tension. The o-ring is there for a seal, not really to provide tension to the knob. I use our ACE 2 grease on the threads on all of our casting reel knobs. This seems to take care of the problem and further seal from water intrusion.
