Scorpion MGL

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Scorpion MGL

Post by russ57 » Tue Sep 24, 2019 4:02 pm

Has anyone used it a decent amount so far? I am looking for a reel for my Expride 7M glass, and this is the front runner. My only real concern is the smaller handle on the 6.2:1, my choice for reaction baits. The Curado K has a bigger handle, but for me it lacks the "It" factor.

How much of the handle do you see when you're actually fishing?

A friend of mine wanted mine soo bad he bought it off me. Lol. Hes been using it for frogs and no issues yet. Really though, it hasnt been out long enough yet. The Curado K has though, and they are the same reel, minus the spool.

I know, but the scorpion looks way sexier.

Been using mine in the Salt catching Threadfin Salmon and also trolling and hard sticking Estuary Cod, so far so good, not a great deal of fish but a few that really put it through it’s paces. No problems casting, nice and smooth retrieve, I have the hg 7.4.

I've been putting some miles on mine since it was released. It's great for bombing Keitechs and spinnerbaits. I'm really happy with mine and I'm debating picking one up in a 6:1 to go with my HG.

For those of you that own the new red Scorpion MGL, what are the gears made of (brass or aluminum)?

Buy a 96mm Met handle for the Scorpion...problem solved.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Got the 6 speed in a few days ago. I won't be using it again until april due to the weather, but it definitely felt more effortless to cast then the K, and got a tad better distance. I will definitely be swapping out the handle to a 96mm one for next season.
The handle tolerence also seems tighter, but that may be because it is newer then my K and DC.

Didn't take long for one over here to go buzzy...

Not sure what ratio but the brass gears gone already after a couple handfuls of fish...

Pretty good reel, it’s similar to curado k but different in many ways
