2020 Zillion 10
2020 Zillion 10
Anyone see this yet? Looks cool but I definitely don't need that fast of a gear ratio. Not sure if they will be offering it in lower ratios.

10:1...
When were the days when 5.#:1 was considered high speed...
Wonder how long the gears will last?

I was thinking the same thing. How thin does that pinion have to be to get the gear ratio up that high?
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

And that thin pinion gear will in theory take 10x the abuse/wear as the main gearhoohoorjoo wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 1:13 pmI was thinking the same thing. How thin does that pinion have to be to get the gear ratio up that high?

Just realized I missed the other Project T thread (https://tackletour.net/viewtopic.php?f=47&t=82717) that had this in it already, my bad!

And the drive side plate will have to hang very low to accommodate the gears. It does look interesting though. I hope that we can get our hands on one soon.Hobie-Wan Kenobi wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 1:27 pmAnd that thin pinion gear will in theory take 10x the abuse/wear as the main gearhoohoorjoo wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 1:13 pmI was thinking the same thing. Re: 2020 Zillion 10
The only thing I could see that they'd do to increase the thickness of the pinion gear is to reduce the shaft that traverses it from the spool friction knob?
Unless they're making it from a unobtanium alloy that's stronger than before?

Well, the 9.1's don't seem to have a problem with longevity when maintained correctly.
I'll be obligated to get one just because I love the platform and it looks freakin' sweet if nothing else.

they finally made a reel that matches the blue on steez ags rods!!Hogsticker2 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 8:51 pmPics178f701496b30f99d63b93b96207d4045f9e4abc_large.jpgc59b4e41f406dfcdf5877fcbc722000280ff1793_large.jpg10f7c29ebc939e195db87f041377966bcd016d7f_large.jpg00ed34915ebb5025a4a3a7cfaf9ef5d4b9cfc664_large.jpg3881a5547348ea8775d49d40de9f3fda0f487069_large.jpg

I wouldn’t expect the pinion to break and not be able to do it’s job anymore - but don‘t you feel the higher the gear ratio the quicker a reel feels geary and develops that buzzing vibration?poisonokie wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 7:47 pmWell, the 9.1's don't seem to have a problem with longevity when maintained correctly.

Re: 2020 Zillion 10
That has not been my experience with the Zillion SV. Mine is like glass. My fishing time is divided among a lot of reels, though, and I make sure and keep it maintained. Also, when I do use it it's not for baits with very much resistance.dennis_rf wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2019 6:47 amI wouldn’t expect the pinion to break and not be able to do it’s job anymore - but don‘t you feel the higher the gear ratio the quicker a reel feels geary and develops that buzzing vibration?poisonokie wrote: ↑Wed Nov 20, 2019 7:47 pmWell, the 9.1's don't seem to have a problem with longevity when maintained correctly.
I would say that the higher the ratio, the more work you're doing per crank, and the less effortless it is likely to feel. I'd say that effect is pretty marginal unless the reel is under load. Still, that may equate to a fast reel seeming to be less smooth than a slower one. I've had new reels of all ratios, Zillion TWS 9.1 & Luna 5.8 included, where I can feel the gears meshing. I think it comes down to each individual reel and how well the gears are lubricated.
This is the way.
Re: 2020 Zillion 10
I'm not feeling this one... yet. It just seems that they updated the old frame with the zero adjuster, new paint job/cosmetics, and the recessed brake dial side plate. None of those things are bad, I just wish they had maybe used a newer frame, like the Steez A. Would love to eventually see an aluminum Steez CT frame, even if it is more than the normal $300 Zillion price. I am also an outlier for the gears, I changed my Zillion TWS 9.1 to the 7.3 gears (weren't bad, just didn't feel as good as the 7.3 set). Personally for me, I have had so many mid priced reels I would just step up to the Steez level reels now. I think I would rather have a JDM Steez CT or Steez SV for $150 area more.
Re: 2020 Zillion 10
I have zero need for a 10:1 reel but if I can put 6.3:1 gears in the new Zillion I would buy one in a heartbeat because it has the recessed mag dial.
