Painting magnesium reel?????

Has anyone painted a magnesium reel?. If so what steps did you take to prepare for primer and paint?. What type of paint did you use. Have a chronarch 50mg that I bought used that has the original paint and clear falling off. No corrosion problems. I’ve read magnesium can be tricky to paint. Any help would be appreciated

It's the steps before just priming it, to get the proper magnesium primer to stick - that's if you remove the factory primer and go to bare metal state.

You could get someone to carefully reduce the layers by gently soda blasting / vapour blasting and retain the stable factory primer and build up off that in which is what I would do honestly.

Magnesium is a strange metal once exposed to air and its moisture...

Have you painted a mag reel yourself? Well I was thinking of doing it myself and going to bare metal. I’ve read some articles but they are all auto related.

I haven't, although I've epoxied some magnesium corrosion in my Core 50Mg but ideally they recommend that if it's going back to bare metal you'll need to have it in a humidity controlled environment...

Also there are specialist magnesium primers which I would go for than a general etch primer only.

Also no scrubbing with anything steel etc, its not an easy process by any means... Research it very carefully as there is no point if your going to do more damage down the road.

If you're just trying to protect the magnesium from exposure from scratches and boat rash, try using clear nail polish, or a closely matching colored nail polish to restore the protective coating. If you want to do it for a cosmetic reason, like to change the reel's color, you run a big risk of making the reel unfishable.

Well the paint on the reel is bad and it’s heavily scratched so that’s why I want to repaint the whole thing. I was lookkng into someone doing it but I’ve had no luck finding someone who custom paints reel. I’ve read the guys that used to do it don’t do it anymore. Do you happen to know some one who paints reels?

Sorry, I don't know of anyone who is custom painting reels.
Try googling it, and see what comes up.

I’ve coated a few Magnesium reels using Cerakote and automotive paint. Cerakote is a ceramic based spray on media available in 100s of colors. Cerakote is applied directly over a degreased/ sandblasted surface and then cured in the oven. Problem with old magnesium reels is that they have pitting under the factory finish. Cerakote will protect the reel from any future corrosion. Filling in the pitting is not needed but recommend if going for that showroom finish.

Here’s a few pics of two reels. The Shimano aldebaran I did not fill in the pitting and the Td-z type R I filled in the pitting before applying Cerakote.
