March 2020 debut... Poison Ultima 172H getting the full carbon grip upgrade treatment in a new “triangle shape”. Looks like that’s going to be the new top dog for Shimano.

The triangle grip looks sort of weird but im sure its going to be a great rod. That 1611ml+ looks really interesting

Saw the release dates yesterday for those models without any other info or pics and wondered why they were announcing release of existing models. Then I wondered if it could be a new gen. Guess so. I buy into the possibilities of additional feel and lower likelihood of accidentally launching the rod while operating. Looks funky at first glance, but I applaud innovation. I wonder if anything else is changed.

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible

I'm actually more curious about the reel

Looks like I’ll need one of these too.

Looks like the 2020 Met to me.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

The rod looks great and gotta be contender against Oltre, Daiwa RD, Evergreen, you name it. Wish they convert whole line up to those handles.

My favorite line of rods. I have a few of the different models--the Ultimas are incredible rods.
The 66M Versatile is the best medium rod I've ever used.

Definitely on the hit list to try. Was hoping they’d also do the 170H+ option in the Ultima finally but the 172H is widely loved. I like that the handle is slightly longer than the previous 172H too. Gonna look like a stealth bomber on the water. Anyone know if these are full Ti/Torzite or the mix of Torzite and SiC?

Can anyone with a current model Ultima (preferably 172H) confirm whether the guides are all Torzite or a mix of Torzite and SiC?
Re: We really not gonna talk about the new 2020 Ultima 172H “full carbon triangle grip”?
Looks interesting, saw a photo of the rod on the Tackle Trap's Instagram story a day or two ago. Looks like the additional models make use of the newer Spiral X Core technology too.
Looks like a mix. From Shimano Japan:
Torzite ring / titanium KT guide (butt is LNSG SiC ring), 264UL is YSG (SiC)
Top guide: 162L-S / 264UL is LG (torzite), 170M / 172H is FST (SiC), 166M / 170MH is KGST (SiC) The guide is basically set in the right place for the right material according to the required performance. Shimano bass rods use a unique guide setting derived from repeated tests. The 162L-S is micro-specification and emphasizes lightness, while the 170M and 172H are semi-micro specifications to achieve both lightness and cast performance. Uses a KT guide with a thin and lightweight "torzite ring" and an LG top (162L-S only) to reduce the total guide weight and rod moment. The 170M and 172H top guides with high frictional resistance use the reliable FST (SiC ring), while the butt parts of all items use the light, cast-feel LN guide (SiC ring) with excellent cast feel.
