Mini jig rod for trout.

Mini jig rod for trout.

Post by Real Pudd legend » Sun Feb 16, 2020 10:25 pm

Any suggestions for a sweet rod for mini jigging in the 7’0 range?

The Phenix Iron feather comes in 7'1 and 7'2. They also make longer rods. I personally used to use the 8'6, and felt it was a great rod. Now, I have moved onto custom rods in the 9 foot range for minijigging trout with bobber/mini jig.

Try the new daiwa kage UL rod in 7'1. My buddy bought one and the rod has a sweet look, bit stiffer action than normal similar to a phenix elixir if you've held one. These rods are also only available to local tackle shops.

Great question. It depends on the type of action, power, and line test you prefer.

I am presuming that you will primarily use 2 lbs test?

Regarding power, some like a very soft 'flippy' rod/tip, believe it is more sensitive and gives a proper jigging action with little effort. Others like a stiffer rod from tip to handle, believing that is actually more sensitive. So there is no definitive response. I feel that the person fishing adapts to some degree to the rod.

That said, at $300 budget, I wonder if you are close to having a custom made for you.

The Iron feather is nicely beyond $300 unless you find a deal. Interestingly, of those I've met, the Iron Feather engenders a real passion - they either really like it or hate it. I've not found those who are in-between about it. Those who like it think that it is very very sensitive. Those who do not tell me that it is low in sensitivity. Interesting isn't it?

My best suggestion is, if possible, find some friends to test their rods. I find that I can use just about anything and appreciate each for its strengths, including $25 China stuff which is better than it has any right to be all the way to ultra high performance blanks and builds that I designed. I used to be a lot more obsessed about rods but realize now that there are a lot of other factors that leads to success in using mini-jigs. I am convinced that some of the best minijig fishermen I know will outfish me all day long even using cheap rods while I use the ultimate unobtanium JDM rods.

This is not to say that the rod does not matter or that you should do a serious search for your ideal rod. It's just that there may not be just one ideal rod.

I just received the above rod partly based on Alphahawk's advice, its very nice and light for a 7' 1" rod. Looking forward to trying it out on trout with both 2lb and 3lb JDM line.

I'm new to JDM rods so I cannot offer any real advice but will update with a report soon.

I ordered mine off Digitaka, took only 4 days to arrive. Keep watching their website.

Thanks for the heads up, by chance does the 6’10 TZ fish similar to the 7’1?

Close I would say...I don't own a 71 but the bending curves are close. I did own a 610 and a 65. Used the 610 to jig up and land 350 Smallies out of Dale Hollow Lake in spring of 2016 off the spawning flats in a 5 day period. The 610 was superb for that using a 3.75# test nylon line.
