Metanium MGL + Curado K brass MM gear swap

Post by Slazmo » Fri Mar 13, 2020 7:56 pm

We firstly don't get these Metanium's here in Australia so when one popped up with a Japanese gent offering it for a price slightly more than a second hand Curado K you naturally jump on it pretty damn fast!

I've tried looking for pictures of the process but couldn't find much so hope it helps someone wanting to do the same procedure...

Stripped and went through it relishing the fact that it's just the same inside as any other baitcaster Shimango produce in essence - however for the magnesium frame and gear plate it's a damn fine reel overall - but the new / import price to here in Aus is a deathly expensive one!

On the wind you can feel the aluminium MM gears buzz happily away and to note the reel is in a beyond exemplary condition 10 / 10 in all respects zero wear anywhere to see...

So onto the gear swap - HG aluminium main gear out and HG Curado K main gear in...

Pictures tell the tale and the weight gain from the swapping. I also used the stainless steel clutch plate, stainless steel drag pressure plate and the carbon washers from the Curado K doner... (long story with that one)...

So what was the reason for using the stainless bits?

Carbon washers. Not a fan of anodised against carbon.
