Nice BC reel for Casting 1/4-1/2oz baits LONG DISTANCE

Have been enjoying the Daiwa SV Light LTD for BFS stuff that was recommended to me on here. I am now looking for something to cast weightless 5-6” Senkos as far as humanly possible. I fully understand these baits are not all that light, so it doesn’t have to be a reel that offers super low end weights. More so care about casting distance and best drag i can get for the money. I will be spooling up with 7-8lb fluorocarbon (no braid). Looking for either Shimano or Daiwa, $250-$350 range.

I have several nice spinning setups, but just wanted to play with a BC setup for these baits.

Senko 5" weights exactly 3/8Oz
Seems to be everybody raves about new Zillion with Boost SV spool.
I would go with this reel.

If you're looking for a Shimano product, the Metanium MGL 150 B is really nice.

The Bantam MGL works great for that weight range. I use mainly Shimano and Daiwa but the best casting reel I've had for senkos was a 13 Fishing Concept A. I don't know why but it will bomb a weightless senko.

Long range shimano: Antares 70 or HG (70 is smoother though) 3/8 and above
Daiwa: oG zillion with a IP79 spool
IS/ OG Steez with a G1 spool ( handles 1/4 very well)
TDZ with a KTF kahen spool (secondary option ZPI PG spool).

Just my humble opinion but I’m happy with mines

If you go the OG Zillion route IP79 spool, J Dream 7.9 spool, HLC spool with the dimples not the perforated one , IZÈ PE long cast and Long cast spool or a TDZ 100M spool are optional. I’ve not used a 100M spool at all. Don’t forget to upgrade the stock bearings if you do go the OGZ route, esp the worm gear bearing while you’re at it. Good Luck

You can find a JDM Metanium MGL 70 B under $350.
I would look at the new Curado 70 MGL too. The original Curado 70 was an amazing caster in that bait range.

In my experience, Antares 70 is your best (albeit very expensive) options indeed. I use it to cast a ton of 3/8oz baits.

I got a Chronarch MGL on my Xtasy 754 for 1/8oz and 3/16oz t-rigs with stick baits and it works well. My go-to worm is a bit lighter than a senko (around 0.32oz), so the full weight is similar to a weightless senko.

#2 is drag.

The other option I hear is great for distance is the Tatula Elite. Would love to hear your take on casting distance with the Curado 70 vs Chronarch, if spool capacity is no issue.

The board has been good to me in their recommendations about the J dream.

I was able to hunt down a 6.4 and 7.9 from ebay; they are both mechanically excellent but not pristine looking. they cast well but I use braid 30lb Berkley X9 and 55 Daiwa samurai. i wouldn't expect that to carry over to fluro. Price varies between $249 and $349 depending on condition and if it comes with a box. it is a 150 size reel and palms well and would be a nice addition to anyone's arsenal... just need to manage casting expectations.

2nd recommendation the board made was the Daiwa Morethan this has the the T wing system and would be a better candidate for a reel using fluro. Again purchased through ebay it bombs cast 1/2oz baits (with braid) the t wing would allow your preferred line less resistance going through the larger reel guide. But is is $18 over your max at $368.

The new Zillion is in your price range, and should be an excellent performer. I enjoy using my 15 Shimano Metanium DC for half ounce baits, though I may sell it to grab the new Zillion. The 1st generation Steez SV TW is also a great caster. These would be my recommendations unless you have the desire to start spool swapping.

I’m assuming you’re speaking about the brand new 2021 one? Looks like $358 from Japan Tackle? I can definitely
Swing that, my only question would be, is this reel coming to the states soon? Any idea when TW or something would

Unfortunately I haven’t made apples to apples comparisons. My Curado 70 MGL is on a GLX 843. Great reel, feels solid, great 3/8oz caster. But I mostly use that combo for pond hopping, which might ask for long casts quite often, but on a 7 foot rod. The Chronarch benefits from that longer 7’5” rod, and I use that combo for long-distance bank fishing. Can’t remember a time I had both rods with me at the same time, doing similar casts.

I did have a pre-MGL Curado on that Xtasy 754 initially, and it cast well (I had just regreased that Curado 70 with ZPI Medium to be fair). But the 70 felt a bit undersized. Both on actual size and in line capacity (I never came close to spooling it, but the reel did go down to 1/2 capacity on long casts). I expect that the 753 is a bit daintier, but I think I’d prefer the Chronarch still. It’s lighter and fits the rod better. Never had issues with drag, and I pulled some fish out of heavy, heavy grass with it.

Dunno about the Tatula Elite; I had one on the rod at the dealer and it “fit” well, but I didn’t get to cast it. The Bantam is more of a heavy-duty reel to me. Cranking in particular.
