T3 Project

Post by Dragboatdriver » Tue Dec 03, 2013 7:33 am

I purchased a T3 1016H from TW while they are on sale, with the sole intention of it being a project reel. So, here is what I want to know... If it were you, what mods would you do to it?

I am thinking:

Megabass IS Finesse Spool
Hedgehog BFS Air bearings
CF handle
Hedgehog Studios Dress up kit (color undecided, make some suggestions!)
Likely will get a set of Daiwa Original Corks, or compressed corks.

As I said, if it were you, what mods would you do?

Thanks in advance!

Personally I think the reel is great straight out of the box :D
If i was to drop some cash on the reel, this is what I would do,
-SV spool
-Zaion dragstar
-Orange custom 'bits and pieces'
-2 additional knob bearings.
-Carbon handle/
-Cork knobs or the stunning new Avail clear (orange) knobs.

That is precisely what I did to the 7.1 I have. I went with red screws, knob caps and pawl cover, an IS spool and the handle off a PXR. The thing is a beast for casting baits up to 1/4 ounce or so. What continues to surprise me is how controllable it is. Very difficult to get it to try to backlash. I have been thinking about picking up another one myself.

T3 SV 1000 spool
Blue RCS handle knobs
Hedgehog Air bearings
Hedgehog carbon swept handle
Hedgehog deep purple dress up parts

This is how I did my MX. Maybe different colors for the silver reel :-k

Would a ZPI TDZ spool work?

The T3 arrived today. So far I have an ITO Engineering Cf handle on it, ZPI Machine Cut Aluminum red knobs, and the Megabass IS Finesse spool in it. I removed the brass shim from beneath the black shim under the palm plate bearing. I don't like how it makes the spool sit offset slightly toward the palmplate and renders the spool tension knob useless. However, it will work for what I'm doing, so I can deal with it. I suppose next step would be the Hedgehog dress up kit. At this point, I am leaning toward red.

Any input is appreciated!

I think the gold dress up kit would look pretty cool on the t3.. Might just be me though.

I don't know why the conversion made your brake useless, mine functions normally

Oh yeah I'll be following this thread closely. With the savings on closeout prices I should be able to have some fun with this reel. I'm thinking of getting it painted. Something similar to the FX68 but not quite.

It didn't affect the braking at all, however the spool tension knob is non-functional now. I have done this mod before and this did not occur. I don't use spool tension on any of my reels, so it doesn't bother me. I am still interested as to what is causing it though.

OP: You can check out the FX Air thread that was posted in the Show and Tell section. Not sure if the bearing sizes are similar in the T3 and FX68 reels. PM the OP in the other thread for suggestions.
Show pics of your reel when you get a chance.

Did you try the spool with the shim installed? Sound's like your new one might have a little more room. Otherwise, a narrower spool bearing should get you there.

Here she is so far. Megabass IS Finesse spool, ITO engineering handle, ZPI knobs. Still waiting for the Hedgehog air bfs bearings and Hedgehog red dress up kit. She is sitting on a Megabass X7 Shading X.
