Line for BFS
Hello All,
I have been reading about various lines for our BFS reels. There seems to be a faction of people who believe that braid is not ok with these micro/shallow spools. Has anyone put braid on there any way? If so, what brand? Berkley Nanofil interests me quite a bit but apparently it is birds-nest city on a baitcasting reel.
If you aren't using braid, why not? What brand do y'all recommend?
Thanks as always,

Re: Line for BFS
I never use anything except braid on bfs spools. It has zero stretch, so it wont compress the spool and damage it. Try sufix nanobraid. It is phenomenal on a casting reel, as is Berkley x9 braid.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.
Re: Line for BFS
I have used only Spiderwire Stelth Smooth 8 for BFS.
I haven't yet tried Morethan 12 for BFS, but it feels smoother and more slippery and I'm thinking try that next when I have used my Spiderwire's.

Re: Line for BFS
Interestingly, BFS reels were originally designed in order to be able to use 8-10lb FC to pitch finesse jigs. I've used both braid and FC, for jigs etc FC is my preference. My understanding is that most risky to spools is a lot of light mono or FC wound on tight. Braid fine so long as you are not transferring big shocks to the spool on a tight drag. For instance loading up with 50lb PowerPro and going flogging.

Cool. So the 30lb FINS I put on there should be fine.Allsorts wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 1:24 amInterestingly, BFS reels were originally designed in order to be able to use 8-10lb FC to pitch finesse jigs. I kid, I kid.
Interesting tidbit of history in regards to the original purpose of bfs fishing. Thanks for sharing!
Re: Line for BFS
I am going to be using my first BFS setup this year and have been wondering the same thing. Currently its spooled with US 4lb mono just because I am not a fan of braid on anything. Hopefully it wont damage the spool in the long run...

Re: Line for BFS
Spider wire stealth smooth 8 is another line I like, though it is much thicker than the rating indicates. The 10# is thicker than the 15# X9 braid I have.

Re: Line for BFS
I have used a plethora of braided lines (perhaps 10 different lines) mainly 0.08 to 0.14 mm on an abundance of different BFS reels and aftermarket spools (15 different spools or so, JDM, DIY etc) - no issue whatsoever.
I guess that you should not try to pull a log from the river with a thumb on the spool and all force on said spool - apart from that, go braid!

Re: Line for BFS
I have been using 4 and 6lb Nanofil on at least one of my BFS outfits for about a year now. I like it.
I wrote a little about it in this reel review......

Interesting. I have read repeatedly that nanofil is awful for baitcasters. How are the backlashes?earthworm77 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 13, 2020 6:57 pmI have benn using 4 and 6lb Nanofil on at least one of my BFS outfits for about a year now. I like it.

Re: Line for BFS
10 lb (4 lb diameter) Sufix Performance braid mainline with 4 lb Sufix Advance mono leader. I'm definitely in the minority as I run braid mainline and some sort of leader on virtually every rig I run. I just like the behavior and handling characteristics of braid, the leader is the working end. I get quite a bit of life from the braid, for me it improves as it ages.

I do this sometimes, but the fish are so dumb around here that straight braid is fine most days.uljersey wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 12:36 pm10 lb (4 lb diameter) Sufix Performance braid mainline with 4 lb Sufix Advance mono leader. Re: Line for BFS
I haven't had anything catastrophic. I dialed in my reel extremely tight and I have a pretty good thumb.alanmacias541 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 11:45 amInteresting. Thanks!
Any over run I've had has only been a couple of spool revolutions and not anything horrific.
