Re: Silver Widow rod

For what it’s worth, I’ve found the Loomis 3 power matches up to the NFC 5 power, in the MBR series. So the Loomis MBR 843 is similar to the NFC MBR 705.

What I don't understand is why I can buy USDM reels in USD on Aliexpress for way less than anywhere in the US.
A lot of counterfeits on Ali.

Re: It’s 2018, why are you buying reels from the past

I must be in the minority. I don’t think any of the top of the line reels from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s come remotely close to the refinement in todays top of the line reels. Some companies haven’t gotten much better though and I’m referring more to Daiwa & Shimanos’ current top of the line.

Re: Daiwa exist 2022

The “S” means shallow spool, the “X” means extra high gear ratio. That was the 2500 Exits that I got. I like the shallow spool in that line replacements are cheaper now and it’s quick and easy to change line. One small drawback is that that only translates to about 85 yards of 16# braid… and that Ex...

Re: Do you still use Boca Bearings inside your reels?

I do, religiously, but have noticed recently that there was little, if any difference in modern, high dollar reels (over $350 price point). On all my previous ($200-ish) reels, I typically got about a 15ft improvement in casting distance - after brief break in AND removing the orange seals. I do oil...

Re: The CHEAPEST ROD BUILD

If I want a cheap rod, I just go out and buy one - there are plenty of functional sub $200 rods out there. I figure it takes me the same amount of time building a cheap rod as it does an expensive one, so why waste the time (or have your name associated with a cheap rod). Besides, it seems $200 (in ...

FYI that reel seat looks like it’s made out of Toray, just like the Alps MVT seat. The Alps MVT is high end. Seams isn’t an indication of low grade, but they definitely could have been buffed out by the builder that touts a high end rod. Does it feel good? Is it light & rigid (this you wouldn’t nece...

Re: How do the top Combos of yesteryear compare to what is available today?

My “yesteryear” was the 80’s (at least when I could afford whatever I wanted), and the answer to the question is: Nothing. Nothing from back then compares to anything today.

Re: Braid to Leader - what's your knot of choice?

No one ever seems to talk about a J knot. It’s hard to tie with a long leader, but I only have to do it once. It easily lasts a full day of tournament fishing, and I’m talking Great Lakes/St Clair smallmouth fishing…. Where you catch a LOT in a day and big ones too.
