BFS Trout Magnet Goal Achieved (almost)

The other day I arrived at an extensive, weedy, lagoon intending to fish Texas rigged TRDs (about 5.5 g) from a kayak but ended up forgetting the TRDs. What do do? Luckily I keep multiple rods and reels in my vehicle. Despite this being the wrong situation (too weedy), I decided to use an Aldebaran ...

Re: BFS reel for those who don't go low

That's actually my most commonly used BFS reel is one that is meant for bass baits and actually has some useable line capacity. Alphas SV, Pixies, Shimano MGL ext. The micro capacity super UL reels are more of a subset of BFS. Your quintessential BFS rig was something like a Majorcraft Volkey BFS L...

BFS reel for those who don't go low

As a fly and ultralight spin angler, I got into BFS trying to go as low as possible. Low as in low lure weight. Started with an inexpensive Aliexpress reel and then a pricey Aldebaran BFS XG, followed by other cheapies. Learned that with the right rod, most any well designed BFS reel can cast 2 g or...

Spinning Reel Sizes

If a company offers reels in 1000, 2000, 2500, 3000, etc. what do the "half size" jumps represent? Is it simply a larger capacity spool on what is otherwise the same frame as the lower number? So, a 2000 and 2500 are the same mechanically?

SUL Spin & BFS Outing

Took the kayak out on a new lake, here in NJ, armed with two setups. Spinning: Major Craft Finetail Area Stage with Shimano Soare BB lined with Varivas 2.2# ester and 4# Kovert flouro leader. Casting: Major Craft Days BFS with a Shimano Aldebaran BFS XG lined with 8# Fireline & 8# Kovert flouro lead...

Re: Bfs casts........... and a trout magnet

...My preferred rod is the Tsurinoya Ares. It's a 4'7" XUL BFS rod with a deep taper to it. As SS said, the 6'1 mirage is nice too but, the Ares is better with that weight Daniel, a 1/64th Trout Magnet jig head plus the plastic is about 1 g and, like you, being able to cast it on BFS was my goal. T...

Re: BFS Telescopic

Glad to see some new comments on this thread because honestly I kind of forgot about this rod being in my quiver. The only fishing I did with it was in winter on a stream that's pretty barren. Time to try it on more productive waters.

Re: New majorcraft 5g ajing rod “aji-do”

Hope this rod works well for your purposes but I don't understand why short ajing rods even exist. Just doesn't seem to make sense in the salt water environment, targeting horse mackerel.

Good to hear. I mostly pond fish and never want to deal with two rods.

I have read about this rod and it seemed like an interesting stick that nots expensive.
Can't tell what rod that is?

Is MC even jdm? I know a lot of them are China made or thai/Malay.

For jdm I'm a fan of multi piece so I tend to lean on Huerco
Think of it this way. When we say USDM it refers to products sold and marketed to the US market but not necessarily made in the US.

Re: Anyone make short glass UL casting rods?

There are some fisherman who swears by fiberglass. Interestingly, there is a Cabela fiberglass fly rod that is highly rated. So I got one and stripped it down - only to find that under its paint, it is really a carbon fiber blank - perhaps with glass added. It definitely was not a fiberglass blank ...

Re: BFS Bobber Help Needed

The US market is woefully (if not to say ridiculously) underdeveloped when it comes to floats. I'd look up "match fishing waggler" and go from there. Personally I run 6+ gram wagglers from "Dream Float Serie Walter" and "Serie Joker" for my float & flies and they work perfectly: heavy enough to cas...
