Those gears sounded great before the side plate implosion. You know that he was taking great care of that reel! He may have a slight excuse in that this may be brackish water. Was that a Shimano reel? :D

Reel sounded horrible. And it looked heavily of used. Moreover this kind of fishing is hard.

I firstly thought he broke his rod. But hi exploded his worn reel...

Looked like he was leveraging from the handle. It could've just been the camera angle, but it looks like just the way how he does.
slip bobbing is the laziest way to fish

That's possible. And it seems that his worn reel was missing spool tension knob. That could be part of horrible sound of reel before explosion.

Those looked like pre rigged frozen frogs?

The destruction of the reel would've amount to stripped screws on the body itself, the handle shaft pulling out of the bushings retainer also due to C clip loss or failure too; no big deal itself and just lies on the owners shoulders for doing it possibly for viewing clout.

I mean when's the last time you've seen a reel blow up like that?

I wouldn’t say “stupid” but more like using wrong gear for wrong job. He set hook hard with dominant hand pulling on handle. The bass one XT low tiers Shimano plastic handle side plate not gonna last this kind of abusive. I have seen mid tier spinning reel handle got bended because using handle to fight the fish not the rod. For those never fish for giant snake head that size 4-5kg in that environment, it is hard to understand.
