Evergreen Super Stallion - How do you fish yours ?

Post by Jdmbassman » Sun Oct 18, 2015 9:48 pm

Hiya all,

So I found the holy grail in terms of rods, a lightly used TKIC Super Stallion. It was a must have based on all the reviews but I'm a little underwhelmed. Maybe it's because I don't fish heavy stuff at the moment.

Currently I'm using it for Swimjigs and it is paired with a Jdream 6.3. I tried it for 6" Senkos but prefer the NRX 893 and Megabass Nautilus for that.

Let me know what you use yours for and your reel combos.

Cheers

Matthew

Mathew,

As posted in a previous thread, I absolutely love mine, although it's become more my old man's favorite rod. Great for big topwater lures, paired with either a tuned Big Bait Special or Conquest 250DC.

Try and keep things in perspective, you're wowed by the NRX 893c with 6" senkos because that rod was specifically designed to fish senkos (and soft jerk baits). The Super Stallion's strength is it's versatility, so you're probably not going to be wowed by fishing one technique with it. The wow comes from fishing 3/8 to 3 oz with the super stallion and it's not giving much up in terms of sensitivity or action to a technique specific rod. It really handles a good deal of applications very well.
With that said, I sold my TKIC SS. If I only wanted one rod it might be the SS, but I typically fish with a few rods and they're set up specifically with how I'm targeting fish.

Drew, I think you hit the nail on the head, I'm not looking for versitility, I would like my collection to be the absolute best tools for the job so I might be parting with mine too.

If you ever plan a trip to Brazil for giant peacocks, you may want to hold onto it.

If you're seriously considering moving to mainly finesse techniques, you might be better off keeping the super stallion as a catch all for your heavier applications. I'm no authority on what's best but you could do worse. You should have something in your lineup that can handle a frog, mattlures hardgill, or a big keitech swing impact... If your upper limit is the nautilus you're somewhat limited. If that doesn't sway you, hit me up, the Tklc SS is still on the "list".

This rod just needed a Z2020 reel. Now I'm looking forward to trying some heavy duy stuff

Use the original and the Black for 1/2 spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, 3/8 to 1/2 oz jig/ worms swimbaits and lighter A rigs.

By the way an Antares and IP68 work on the original and a Met dc on the Black.

Necromancing a bit...

What type lines is everyone using and for what techs on this rod? I'm speaking of the TKIC Tournament.

Thanks in advance.

Lol...yeah man, I get it that the SS lineup in all variants, will like be on the short list of all-time GOATS.

So...what line types do you employ, and what techs do you use yours for?

I have 22 lb. Sunline Defier on mine (w/an Antares DC reel). I use it for all manner of bigger moving baits (cranks, bladed jigs) and topwater (horny toads, buzzjets, etc). Still one of the best all around versatile rounds out there, imo.
