old core 50 and aldebaran or new

Post by kyty » Mon Nov 04, 2019 10:04 am

Wondering what you guys prefer. Old Cores and Aldebaran or the newer version of the 2? My core 50 is the favorite reel I own and I've got several different reels.

Overall, the new is better than old IMO. Addition of Xship alone can’t be ignored. New braking system and Mgl spool make it a much better distance caster as well. The old feels more solid in hand(new version is almost 1/2oz lighter, so this is expected), though this has nothing to do with actual fishing as they are both powerful reels in a small package. The addition of a 7.7:1 brass gear swap in the old model is the only thing that keeps me using them instead of the MGL.

Older E/MG7 are t*ts IMHO, I can't quit them. I like them out of the box but in my stable they are pretty much upgraded 8-) . To me they are like older C-10 or obs chevy/gmc, fun to upgrade, tough, proven and just plain bad a**.

I like both versions.
I have two core 50mg7, two aldebaran mg7.
Also a Aldebaran 50HG, Aldebaran 50, two Aldebaran 30HG.
I use them interchangeably.
The older 50E body feels more solid but the newer Aldebarans are crazy light.

Newer platform for me.. they're lighter, palm better and perform better...
Nothing wrong with the older 50 platform but I wouldn't trade back..

You can do a gear swap in the 50e and pretty much turn that reel into whatever you want. I flip with mines. But the cores are really good reels too.
As was stated here , I’ve modded all mine. And they are strong and proven equipment.

The ergonomics alone on the D7/ core 100 MG7’s are easily one of the best features

I sold my newer Aldebaran and went back to using the old Aldebaran Mg7. I just like how the old ones palm and wasnt a fan of the more hollow feel of the newer reel. I did some mods like the rest here too, ZPI spool, Brenious gears and the usual.

x2
Not the reels in question, but the 1000 xt and Curado 50e are just better looking reels. I prefer them over the new smaller-platform Shim Shams.
