RC001/RC002 suggests uses...

Post by 78Staff » Sun Apr 11, 2021 2:07 pm

So, in my recent Buyee/Japan purchasing spree's, I've wound up with a few ZPI RC Spools - 2 RC001's and a RC-002. I picked up a RR 001 first here, then found a Blue 001 to match a Blue Personal Order, then found an MJR 002 to match my Ito. Now I just have to figure out the best uses for them.

From what I've read, the fixed inductor is better for pitching or skipping vs all out casting, is that correct? My PO's typically are on my crankbait/squarebill setups ie Dobyns 705CB and 764CBRM, and the ito is on my all all-purpose 734C. So if that is the case I might have to move some reels around (or use the spools in different reels maybe). The Ito usually has Sniper 16 on it so not sure how much the 002 shallow spool will hold, since they are no longer available specs are hard to find...

Nonsense. The RC002 spool will flat out sling a bait out there just fine. I can really put a 3/8 oz jig and trailer out there as far as humanly would ever need to. If you have fished the Zillion PE special with fixed inductor before these cast pretty similar IMO. The 002 is shallower vs the deper 001. So if using lots of line or heavier line the 001 is the clear choice.

try the deeper one in a steez 100/103 (older platform) if you have one, you'll have trouble setting the hook at those distances

never tried the 002, so can't compare...

I use a 002 in an OG Steez for jerkbaits with 20# braid and a fluoro leader. As was said, it will fire them out there. I would say their lower weight limit would be around 1/4 oz for more aerodynamic baits and a little higher for baits that don't fly as well. The 001 is actually a close performer to the 002 but doesn't handle 1/4 oz quite as well. It has tons of line capacity though which is helpful if you're fishing heavier fluoro or mono.

Thanks all good info, so I won't need to restrict these to certain applications, that's good to hear. Would like to use the 002 MJR in the Ito since it matches so nice, so will look to move that reel to another setup - typically I'm using 16lb sniper or 15lb Mean Green on the 734C so I don't think it will hold much of that line. I'll look at using it with 10lb/12lbs on something, maybe my jerkbait setup as mentioned above...

I concur!
Very great comparison too, the zillion PE special and RC002 are very similar

Did some spool swapping today - interestingly the RC's don't fit in the Steez A very well, there is a definite rub going on. It's not a spool dimension issue, so I can only assume the fixed inductor is just a bit too long. Not sure if there are shims or other issue I will look closer later. So I put the R+ spools back in my two pitching/punching Steez A setups and will likely put the RC001's into my color PO TD-Z's as originally intended - which are crankbait/squarebill/treble bait setups.

The RC002 I am still on the fence. It looks so good in the TD-Z Ito, but I prefer the smaller frame OG Steez 103 on my jerkbait rod. I just don't have that many combo's that I run 10 or 12lb line on down here in Florida lol. But I spend so much on this reel I need to find a good use for it hah... I have a 685 which is my back of the boat target/tight cover/docks/trees squarebill setup, I suspect it will wind up on it where I can run Sniper or Tatsu 12/15 and not have much worry about the lower line capacity.

Or, I will give up the MJR/Ito color match dream (hell it's mostly covered by line anyway right lol) and just put it in the OG Steez on the Jerkbait rod, and keep the stock R+ spool in the Ito and keep it on the 734.

You should put the MJR in the OG Steez, spool it up, then rip a few casts with it. You'll forget all about the fact that it matches your Ito perfectly. Besides, that just gives you a reason to be on the hunt for another MJR  :big grin:
