JDM Pistol Grip Topwater Rods

Post by John G » Mon Feb 27, 2023 11:30 pm

Not that there is anything wrong with the Smith pistol grip topwater rods, but are there any other manufacturers of JDM pistol grip topwater rods?

They aren't as easy to find, nor are they inexpensive, but the Megabass Pagani Trad blanks and grips are awfully nice! The Pop-X Stick is a lot of fun to fish.

I don't have anything to add to other options, but I tracked down one of the Megabass Pagani Trad grips, blanks and a P300 last year and fished it heavily throughout last summer. For me, these old style setups were a revelation - I had so much fun fishing these that they became my primary setup for night fishing...maybe not the most practical way to fish, but I found this style to be incredibly enjoyable. The Pagani blanks are all really nice topwater rods, each slightly different and perfect for the ponds and back creeks nearby. Catching anything above 2-3 pounds and the fight is a really different and much more fun experience than catching with my typical heavier setups...actual effort is involved in bringing these fish in! I'd highly recommend tracking down a pistol grip setup for anyone looking to try something different...they're a really enjoyable way to fish and a great break from the norm.

There was a guy who used to hang out here, Christian, from Germany. They had a forum like this one. Christian had a blog called "Surface Diary". It's no longer on line but Wayback worksa:

Brightliver is a popular pistol grip brand in Japan. The site also had wide selection of rods.

I bought a Smith topwater rod from BassJP. Seeing as though the Classic Ambassadeurs are really expensive and I wanted a round reel, I bought what I am hoping is a damn near mint Calcutta 100XT.

That sounds like an awesome combo, let us know how you like it!

I follow a handle/rod maker out of Japan called "slowtaper". Here is some of his work.
