2023 Vanquish

Post by Rodster14 » Wed Apr 26, 2023 2:21 am

I have a an Exscence currently, but I’m intrigued by the new Vanquish. How does a Vanquish compare to other Shimano offerings (Stella, Exscence, etc)?

I dont have an Exsence, but I have 18, 22 Stella and 19 Vanquish.
Stella is good for straight retrieve lures like crankbaits and spinners.
Vanquish is good for stop and go lures like jigs and other small soft plastics.
I'll grab the 23 Vanquish once it becomes available. I'm hoping is even better than the 19 version.
On the daiwa side, I have 18 Exist, 22 Exist, 21 Luvius airity and 23 airity. None of these compare in lightness of retrieve as the Vanquish.

Should I get the 2500s or the faster HG version?

2500S recovers 75cm or 29.5" per turn.
2500SHG recovers 86cm or 33.9" per turn.

For me I would take the higher speed. I don't think 75cm/29.5" is a bad recovery rate, I would actually prefer that for general baitcasting purposes. For a spinning reel's use I would prefer the higher (low to mid 30" recovery rate) due to what I use them for. For me it seems easier to pump a baitcaster handle and catch up to a fish or recover slack versus pumping the longer single knob handle of a spinning reel.

There are also some "C" or compact versions of the Vanquish. They are listed as having a 44mm/13.5mm spool, while the true 2500 has a 47mm/17mm, and the actual 2000 has a 43mm/13.5mm spool.

this is a personal preference, i almost always err on the side of a slower gear ratio. its against the norm in spinning reels, but i can always speed up my retrieve but have a harder time slowing down, epsecially if i am not thinking about it. i end up buying my reels mostly from japan for this reason, USDM spiining reels usually dont offer anything below 6.X:1.

I’ve got seven of the Exsence and some Stellas. I fish river smallmouth and they hold up beautifully for the task. Sorry I can’t compare them to anything JDM as I’m a TT oddball and prefer to purchase my reels here. The environments I fish are way too tough on equipment to worry about repairs so I’m strictly Shimano US. I get the lower ratio regarding working bottom contact but I’ll take the high speed for catching up to 20” and better river smallies running at me in current. I realize everyone differs.

Happy shopping.

The models are showing up in JDM sites available now. Just picked up the 23 VANQUISH C2500SXG.

Also picked up the 23 TATULA LT 2500S-XH-QD since that showed up also.

I paid with a virtual Visa (Capital One) and it was about 5% cheaper than Paypal due to better conversion rates.

Is it normal to have some axial play in the spool? I can move the spool if I grab it with my fingers ~1-2mm. The drag is tightened when I do this fwiw. My cheapo spinning reels do this. My buddy said it's normal and his spinning reels do this. Digitaka said I can return it and reorder a new one if I don't feel comfortable with the quality of the reel. Just want to confirm before I spool it up. Sweet reel otherwise.

This is pretty normal for all spinning reels.
From piscifun to stella's. All my spinning reels have slight play in the spool.

I bought the 2500S model. Absolutely love it. Definitely noticeable improvements over my 2019 Vanquish 3000.
Extremely smooth reel, prefer it over my Exsence 3000 by a decent margin. Line lay is nothing short of perfect.
Hated throwing 6lb fluoro on it (just wanted to try it again but never been a fluoro on spinning guy)... Went back to my usual 8lb Daiwa J-braid grand. Casting seems so smooth and effortless, something else noticeable over my 2019 VQ 3000. Just little flicks send the lure flying, and I'm thinking it's how the line lays on the spool now.

Currently I have it mounted a Steez AGS 7'6 MML Gen 2... it's been a fantastic combo to fish. I've caught walleye, 2lb or less smallmouth, and a couple 4-5lb largemouth on it (plus a ton of dinks). The setup just performs, honestly can't ask for more.
I'll be up on St Clair at the end of the month to put it through it's paces vs some pig smallies.

I have a JDM Stella 2022 that should show up today as well. Will get an idea of how everything stacks up to the best. But my Exsence is now on the chopping block to be replaced by a 2023 Vanquish 3000... we will see.

I will add that no matter how smooth these reels all feel, they still are behind my Daiwa Certate. That's the one I really want to compare to the Stella. My Certate doesn't even feel like it's under load and the startup is very very light on the bail.
With that said, the 2019 Vanquish was my fav reel in the past... it's now been replaced by the 2023 Vanquish. Will see if the Stella can change my mind.

I can look when I get home from work in a couple hours. I might go to the pond this morning anyways when I'm home so definitely can check then.

I am loving my Vanquish 2500SGH. The Exscence was an incredible reel, but I like this better. I also don’t miss the T shaped handle.
