FX Air

Post by kakaryan » Thu Nov 14, 2013 12:04 am

After spending hours browsing Japanese blogs and sharing tuning thoughts with TT fellow (thank you africanbass), I present you the FX Air.

The best finesse spool option for Megabass FX68? Megabass IS finesse spool of course! 8-)

However, the IS finesse spool (Steez platform) doesn't perfectly fit the FX68 (T3 platform). Both share 34mm dia. but the IS spool shaft is a little bit longer. You cannot close the FX68 sideplate.

A previous solution for T3 was to remove a brass shim under the sideplate bearing. By doing this, it gives some space and now you are able to close the sideplate. But when it comes to the FX68, the spool still feels tight and doesn't spin freely as usual. We need more space!

A new solution is to replace the spool bearing with a thinner one, so that the spool could sit deeper in the reel. By replacing the stock 5x11x4 spool bearing with a 5x11x3 bearing. Now, it gives 1mm more space.

With this new solution, the IS finesse spool could sit perfectly in the FX68. There is more than enough space for you to adjust the cast control knob as well. And of course, the spool spins freely as expect. :big grin:

Enjoy.

I bet that is among the best-casting reels around! IS spool + light line + T-Wing= Casting Nirvana! =P~ =P~

Hi kakaryan, do u happen to have a zonda hedgehog or alphas/sol with a mb finesse spool in it? Im very curious about the performance comparison :D

I thought you knew the answer. Why bother asking me? :?:

Mcyl wrote:And now I think about it... An IS finesse spool having a fixed inductor will defeat the purpose of mag 3d, I.e. That wonderfully adjustable Spool RPM.
Here's the explanation:

1. In mag V, Z and now air brake. The inductor pushes out further depending on the RPMs of the spool in the the first place.

2. The mag 3d settings moves the mag rings forward and backwards so in normal mag 3D reels. By selecting L, N or Mac you control HOW HIGH an Rpm do you desire before braking starts with the dial dictating the force of the mag field.
Hence a fix inductor will defeat the purpose of Mag 3D in the first place as it never moves along the shaft.

kakaryan, I suggest you purchase a t3 SV spool, it's control is simply eye opening!

Martin

Firstly, you get the whole idea wrong.

The idea is providing a solution for fitting the IS finesse spool into FX68, a finesse spool mod for T3 platform and I am sure many people are interested. It works for Steez platform spools as well.

We are not here debating braking system, and if we did ever need any suggestion, simply buying a T3 Air would always be the best case. Why bother tuning?

Secondly, I have both the Steez SV and T3 SV spools and I dont think they are as finesse as the IS finesse spool. Different animals.

And thirdly, spool inductors and sideplate magnets are two systems. A 3D mag. brake sideplate still serves its purpose no matter what spool is being used. It still gives more braking force in max. mode and less in long cast mode.
