That there is a solid cork knob inside the old grey color I styles. It looks like if you sand down the plastic tube flush with the knob then run a bit of filler followed by cork seal you could have a DIY OG cork nob. I took a razor blade and a heat gun to an old Pixy knob to get at the cork underneath. I cut one in half the other day to grind a knob screw off and discovered that it was solid cork inside. I'm guessing this only applies to the old grey colored I style knobs. The newer black ones probably have a cork puree in them.

Also on sanding down the plastic tube... if you sanded the handle side then you would need to use shims to compensate. What looks better I wonder. A bunch of shims or leaving the end of the tube exposed. Maybe sand down the tube and use shims under the screw instead.

Ive used the brush-on in the half pint can for cork rod handles. You can get a matte or a shiny finish in clear urethane. Sanding down the tube at the top doesnt change any geometry relating to how the knob sits on the post. It may require sanding the bottom of the knob plugs to compensate for the tube being shortened.

Heat gun to soften the grey coating then took a razor blade and made a deep enough cut to get through the coating but to not cut into the cork. The cut was length wise on the knob top and bottom. Just pulled it right off in big chunks.

I don't have a heat gun. Will a hairdryer do? I am tempted to try this on the older gray ones and the black ones.

Worth a shot.

Quality of the cork seems to very considerably. I did two TD-X handles with the riveted on knobs. They were pretty rough underneath but one knob looked good. My Pixy knobs seemed like a higher grade of cork but without more samples to verify I can't say for certain. Could just be a luck of the draw type thing.
