Curado 300K for snook

Post by russ57 » Fri Jun 03, 2022 8:50 pm

Is the Curado 300 K a good choice for tossing 7/16-5/8 ounce(ish)paddletails for snook? Today I was using the 200K with 15 pound test and caught 3 snook, including a 12 ish pounder which I was quite happy about. A guy who helped me land it on the jetty said that I should be using heavier line in the future to avoid break offs. He was saying like 40-50 pound braid with an 80 pound leader, thought that was with spinning gear.

I had no issues with the 200K, 15 pound mono, and my poison adrena 72H. I don't think a mono leader that heavy would even go through the guides on that rod. Would I be better off using a 300K and some 50 ppound bread to thick mono leader? I can see how that would have better abrasion resistance on the rocks of the jetty, but I don't know if it would cast the light weight well due to the larger spool size. I could also use 40-50 pound braid to a 25-30 pound mono leader with the 200K I guess.

I will not be using spinning gear as I don't like it for anything but ned rig.

You can go 30 lb braid on a 200 easy. Use 40-50 lb fluorocarbon leader and you should be good. That's not to say the guy recommending heavier gear is wrong. I mentioned the size rigs I'd use for snook inshore (your other thread), but if we're moving to ocean jetties, I'd step up. Calcutta 400 or the like, 50 lb braid, 50 lb flouro leader. 8'-ish rod. One of my favs is an old Loomis BB965C GL3. I know they still make something similar, just to give an idea of what kind of rod I'm talking about.
