Super Tuning - Pinion and Yoke - Calcutta 200GTB

Post by O26A » Wed Mar 27, 2013 5:40 am

Ok,

So over the winter I pulled apart my Calcutta 200GTB for some maintenance and upgrades. Replaced spool bearings with boca’s and carbon drag washers. Then I start reading up on super tuning. So I polished the shims, the spool shaft, inside the pinion gear and brake race way. Anyway I noticed one part that in my mind could be polished but thought I would ask around first. It’s the outside of the pinion gear. The part that comes in contact with the yoke right in the center. When I looked at it closely I noticed it is rough I can actually see lines from when they cut out the teeth for the gear portion on the pinion.

My question is, if I polish that down smooth will it cause any problems?

It can be polished, but I would be careful. If you take two much the gears will feel and sound rough.

i would leave the out side of the pinion gear alone! like dr said, you get it too small, or even slightly out of round, you have just made your reel feel like a coffee grinder. as well, polishing the outside of the pinion bearing will bear no performance enhancement whatsoever.

also, the small toothless area that rides in the pinion yoke is VERY close to the gear's teeth....i have seen where even the slightest ding to the teeth of the pinion gear will make you reel sound like a rock in a hubcap  and feel even worse!
