Anyone tried DIY spools? $29-$40 BFS spools!
Re: Anyone tried DIY spools? $29-$40 BFS spools!
Also Air Brake honeycomb DIY spools for 28, 30 and 34 mm reels. I have the 17 Tatula SV version of this spool. Crazy light weight but the Air Brake is a little questionable in terms of quality of construction.

Also clear colored plastic Daiwa I style knobs from AMO. I want that aluminum thumb bar on that example TDZ.

Without reading 60 pages of this thread, could someone tell me what the best BFS spool would be for my Steez CT SV? Thanks

Roro spool from rorolure is very nice if you can live with a Chinese spool in your Japanese reel.HobeyBaker wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 7:30 amWithout reading 60 pages of this thread, could someone tell me what the best BFS spool would be for my Steez CT SV? Thanks
KTF spool from karil.co.jp is also very nice, JDM and more expensive.

LowRange, I am curious, you write “/“ because Amo and Roro is the same company?LowRange wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 6:24 amAmo/RoroHobeyBaker wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 7:30 amWithout reading 60 pages of this thread, could someone tell me what the best BFS spool would be for my Steez CT SV? Thanks
I have many Roro spools (10+) and at least 5 Amo spools. My experience with Roro is good while my experience with Amo is less good, e.g. ill-fitting and noisy spools.

Amo goes by another name. I think it's Momo now. Roro. Roro appears to be a different company. You're right about the stock bearings on the Amo spools. The two I have are very loud but otherwise the spool is good.Dalleinf wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 6:41 amLowRange, I am curious, you write “/“ because Amo and Roro is the same company?LowRange wrote: ↑Fri Feb 26, 2021 6:24 amAmo/RoroHobeyBaker wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 7:30 amWithout reading 60 pages of this thread, could someone tell me what the best BFS spool would be for my Steez CT SV? I have a couple of the Amo spools and the bearings scream. Can someone recommend some decent quality bearings that are whisper quiet and also perform well? Don't really want to spend a ton of money.

You can use light oil and a dremel to "run in" the bearings at 10,000 rpm for a few seconds at a time. This will usually smooth out a noisy bearing, provided it isnt going bad already.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Forgive an "I'm just curious" question. How fast does a baitcaster's spool actually spin?hoohoorjoo wrote: ↑Sat Feb 27, 2021 2:29 pmYou can use light oil and a dremel to "run in" the bearings at 10,000 rpm for a few seconds at a time. Dont know if that has ever been quantified before, but I'd guess around 20,000 rpm just after start-up at the beginning of the cast.

Re: Anyone tried DIY spools? $29-$40 BFS spools!
I roughed out some back of the napkins calcs and for a 50yd cast it would spin a spool (30mm diam) about 2100 revs. So if a cast took 3 sec, the that would be 485 rev/sec or about 9.8K rpm.

^^That assumes a constant speed from beginning to end of cast. Those numbers may be an accurate average of the entire duration of the cast. The highest RPM would occur a couple seconds after start-up. I remember reading that Shimano's DC system is regulated to reach up to 10,000 rpm at the beginning of the cast, iirc.
