Daiwa Catalina TW 100 Spool

Post by trav » Fri Jul 02, 2021 1:48 pm

If this has been brought up, I apologize. I tried searching and didn’t quite find the answer.

Is there a spool that fits a Daiwa Catalina TW 100 that holds more line than the stock spool? From what I’ve found, the spool is 36mm, does that mean I can get an OG Zillion spool and it’ll fit right in?

OG Zillion won't work. Yes it is 36mm but too narrow.

These spools should work and have more line capacity.

Zillion TWS

The 15xx reels all have the same spool as the Catalina. The Ryoga1520 and the Zillion SV(pre-TW) have the same size spool, not sure on the line capacity of those 2, though. The OG Zillion spools are narrower, so they wont fit.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

The Zillion HD spool is deeper but fixed inductor. Its is excellent with heavy non braid. I have both spools in my Zillion HD. 65# braid on the Catalina TW spool and 20# big game on the stock spool. There really isn't a super deep spool for that platform. You may want to move up to a Tatula 300. Why there isn't a Zillion out yet in that size I have no idea.

THIS!!!

I am so mad I sold my Catalina. I've been trying to find a swimbait reel lately and there are no real free floating spool reels.

I got the TAT300 and it is simply way too big and heavy. Even for throwing 8" baits it seems like overkill. I really wish they had a 250 in the 9.5oz range.

So does this mean that the spool from a Zillion 10.0 will fit?

No, it has a 1016 size spool.

The Catalina TW spool holds a decent amount of 65# braid. Its roughly equal to the Tatula 150 in capacity. I can only really spool it with heavish compact baits like a 7/8 oz frog like this thing.

I put a zillion 1520 spool in mine. I was able to put lots of 20lb cxx on it for big baits.

The JDM site had this I used as reference

"Wide range of SPOOL compatibility Especially compatible with ZILLION 1500 series, compatible with 1.0-300 for 1516, 1.0-400 for 1520 and DEEP tyraba."

What JDM site, if you don’t mind me asking?

Actually I have found holds less than a Tatula 150. I took the 65# braid off my Catalina TW spool full to the rim and put it on a Fuego CT and it actually had a tiny gap between the line level on spool rim. It has standard 34mm narrow spool capacity despite being a 36mm wide spool because it is shallow. I'm guessing this is done to limit line dig in with lighter braids. These shallower heavy spools are common in PE reels meant for some sort of rock fish use. While they might not be intended for bass baits they can let them rip on the cast. Both my Catalina TW spool and Engetsu cast well distance wise.
