Megabass Honeycomb Zonda Spool Equivalent for PX68

Post by Gone Phishin » Wed Jul 14, 2021 7:48 am

Howdy All. I recently used a honeycomb spool in my Zonda for Ned rigs, and was blown away by the distance and ease of use. It got me to thinking that I'd love a 31MM version for my PX68L for long-casting shakey heads.

Is the DIY Pixy honeycomb the closest/best option here?

Thanks kindly.

I use an Airy Red in mine for ned rigs and can almost spool it of 20# braid with a 1/10 oz head. With lighter heads and smaller diameter line the Ray's should work fine. You absolutely will spool it with a 1/10 oz head.

Is it relatively controlled, or is thumb needed to keep fluff away? Where do you keep the brake dial?

Middle of the dial. It's a fast spool but it is sort of like an HLC in that if you cast it right it will brake just fine. The spool can be a bit wild pitching and soft casting. Guys with handles on the left side seem to cast a bit softer than guys with the handles on the right from what I gather. Your mileage may very depending on casting technique. I put the rod over the shoulder and lay into it as a normal cast and get great distance.

You'll be limited in line capacity with the DIY spool, especially if you aren't using really light braid. The stock Airy Red spool is great for that application, and if you add a set of faster bearings, it's a really fun spool. Now, if you can find one, the ZPI CP301 is another great spool for Neds but gives you much better control when pitching or making softer casts.

Can you bomb a bait with the CP301?

I always enjoyed the IZE finesse spool for the PX platform.

Yeah, within reason, it's still a fixed inductor spool. It won't bomb casts like an OG Zillion HLC but it's definitely not lacking in distance.

How is the presso spool in comparison?
I recently got one
